Soledad is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. It was established in 1887 by the merger of two small communities, Soledad and Happy Valley. Eldredge who served as commander of Naval forces during World War II and later became a U.S. Senator from California. The first store at Soledad was built on the east side of town by Wm. Jernigan and his son-in-law George Gillett in 1887. A post office called "Happy Valley" opened in 1886, and the name was changed to "Soledad" in 1887 when it merged with neighboring Happy Valley. In 1902, Fenton Cooley opened a general store at Soledad which became known as the "Cotton Store". The store closed around 1918 but continued to be used as an elementary school until it burned down in 1969. A second store also operated atSoledad for about a decade before it too closed down due to fire conditions; however, this building still stands today and is currently being used as part of theSoledAD Elementary School campus (now part of Rancho Bernardo Unified School District). A post office called "Moses" opened on November 15, 1896, and remained open until 1912 when it was replaced by "Solenadera". In 1916, mail service began betweenSoledad and La Habra Heights via horseback because there wasn’t enough road infrastructure available then to support trucks or cars arriving at either location simultaneously. In 1923 an express depot arrived at Soledad from Bakersfield; however, it failed within weeks due to water problems caused by recent rainsstorms that had destroyed many farms near Bakersfield . A new express depot arrived from Lodi on May 15, 1925; however its operations were soon discontinued due to financial difficulties caused by inflationary pressures within Kern County . In 1929 an airplane hangar/service station was added to SOLEDAD located just east of Center Street.. This hangar would become home for SOLEDAD AIRPORT beginning on December 12th 1951 until its closure on September 5th 1973 following arson attacks against several local businesses including the grocery store next door which resulted in $100 000 damage done to that establishment alone! The airport finally reopened on October 1st 1973 after years of renovation with new facilities including Terminal 2 which serviced both civilian air traffic as well as commercial flights serving Southern California ..Today SOLEDAD AIRPORT boasts one runway designated 3L & 3R with several hangars capable accommodating large jets such as Boeing 747s! There are also several restaurants situated throughout SOLEDAD Airport including Starbucks Coffee & Donuts while Camping World offers numerous items such as RV's & trailers available for rent allowing visitors plenty of space regardless their size!
