Navy gift history in Soledad, California began with World War II and the USS Missouri. The USS Missouri was a pre-war battleship that served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1944, she was torpedoed by Japan's Kaga class submarine while en route to participate in the war against Japan. The crew of the Missouri were killed, but their ship remained operational and continued serving as a training vessel until 1946. In 1948, the US Navy commissioned the USS Decatur as a warship. The Decatur was built at Richmond Shipbuilding Company and served as part of Destroyer Squadron One from 1951 to 1957. She then served as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Six from 1958 to 1960. From 1961 to 1966, she served as Commander Destroyer Squadron Nine which was responsible for patrolling San Diego Bay area before being transferred to Commander United States Naval Forces Europe in 1968. She decommissioned in 1971 and was sold for scrap on 10 October 1971. The first naval gift ever given to Soledad County occurred when Commodore John Cushing accepted a gift of cigars from Captain Harry Fenton aboard the SS Constitution on board her way back from Havana Cuba on 7 December 1942 (). After World War II ended, many sailors who had been lost returned home after V-J Day (1946). They brought gifts such as cigars, books, radios and clothing for local civilians who had also experienced wartime service or were involved with military activities such as firefighters or police officers (). Commodore Cushing knew Soledad County would be grateful for these gifts so he decided to accept another gift - rifles () These firearms were donated by Captain Harry Fenton ()

The USS Soledad was laid down on December 7, 1944 by the Bethlehem Steel Company at Gary, Indiana. The ship was launched on January 3, 1945 and sponsored by Mrs. Harry H. Fenton. She was commissioned into the United States Navy on February 20, 1945 with Lieutenant Commander C.H. Ladd in command. The USS Soledad served as a flagship for Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King during World War II and the Korean War before being decommissioned on September 15, 1970 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and sold to Uruguayan interests in 1976 she became "Aurora" (F-8) of Uruguay's navy until her sale to Taiwan in 1995 (F-8ZT). She then operated as an auxiliary vessel with the Taiwanese navy until sold to Omani interests in 2006 (Omani F-10) which renamed her "Alhamdulillah" (L-9). In 2008 she was resold to Egyptian interests under the name "Huda", but reverted back to Alhamdulillah upon her purchase from Omani sources . The town of Soledad in California was founded by Spanish settlers in 1769. The town was named for the Sulphur Springs which were located near the present day town. The first post office in Soledad was established on December 3, 1859. In 1870, Soledad had a population of about ninety people and a school. By 1879, the population had grown to one hundred and fifty-six people and a school. In 1881, a water pipeline was constructed from nearby Kern County to bring water to Soledad from the Salton Sea. This madeSoledad an important center for irrigation and agriculture. By 1902,Soledad had a population of two hundred people and four businesses. One of the businesses in this period was Harry's Hardware which later became Harry's Tire & Rubber Company. In 1916, Mayor William Fenton introduced a resolution proposing that Soledad be given its own city government. On November 6th, 1916, voters approved this proposal with eighty-eight percent voting in favor. On January 5th, 1917 City Manager John Ahern assumed control of city government from Mayor Fenton . In 1923 Mayor Tom Burnett introduced legislation providing for the establishment of schools within the city limits as well as for more efficient street maintenance and lighting within theCity limits. On May 2nd 1924 voters passed an ordinance establishing fire protection within city limits along with other amendments contained therein including extending voting rights to aliens who have residency withincity limits On November 15th 1926 voters ratified ordinances creating park districts within city boundaries; these districts would provide recreational opportunities such as swimming pools etc.. Voter approval also provided for annexation into cities bylaws setting forth certain procedures for annexation In 1932 Mayor Jack Baldwin proposed creation of an annexation commission which would take into consideration community desires for annexation into other cities
Soledad was founded on November 4, 1849 by Don Francisco Soledad and his wife, María de la Luz. The town was named after the Soledad River which flows through the area. The first post office in Soledad opened on December 7, 1851. On January 1, 1870, the town became a part of California.
