Soledad is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census, Soledad had a population of 378 people. The name "Soledad" originates from Spanish and means "peaceful place." The town was founded in 1886 by Wm. H. Tomlinson and his family as a result of their land purchase in what is now the City of Upland. Tomlinsons were among the first white settlers in what would become Kern County. The settlement was named for San Diego County's daughter, Soledad (1848-1915), who became one of the most prominent women in early Kern County history. Today, Soledad remains an agricultural and ranching center with a few small businesses dotting its streetscape. In 1902, when it was annexed by Rancho Rincon de Santa Ana,Soledad became one of the largest towns within Southern California because it possessed good water access and connections to other communities on both sides of the state line that were not yet part of Orange County or Los Angeles County. By 1945, however,Soledad's population had dwindled to just over 100 people due to rural depopulation and dwindling Agricultural production; today only about 10 households still live thereabouts . The city was founded on December 12, 1853 by prospectors from Colorado. The name Soledad comes from Spanish for "saved." In 1875, the city became a part of Mexico City after it was annexed by that country. On October 17, 1912, Soledad became an incorporated city and chose to be known as Soledad County. It has since reverted back to its original name. The history of Soledad dates back to 1853 when prospectors from Colorado landed at what is now Soledad County in order to find new land to mine. Two years later, they named their new town after José María de la Costa y Valdés who had helped them find the area. La Costa y Valdés was also the first Mexican governor of Alta California (upper California). He served from 1849 until his death in 1852 and is considered one of the pioneers of Californian settlement. After his death, his wife found 11 acres near present-day downtownSoledad and began developing it into a small rancho with seventy-five cows and twelve hogs which she called San Vicente de los Bancos (San Vicente's Bank). In 1848, the Mexican land grant of Soledad was given to José María Osorio. In 1852, a post office called Soledad was established in honor of Soledad's patron saint. The town's name was changed to San Francisco de Asís in 1856, and it became a city on December 6, 1906.
