The Sonoma Air National Guard Association (SANA) is a nonprofit, auxiliary organization of the United States Air Force and History buffs have been exchanging airforce gift history in Sonoma County for years. There has always been an air force connection in Sonoma County because of the Santa Rosa Air National Guard Base. The Santa Rosa unit was activated on November 12, 1941 as part of World War II when the United StatesAAF introduced its first jet aircraft into service. In 1947, the United States Congress passed the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation Act which authorized the development and production by Consolidated Aircraft Corporation of new types of strategic bombers including the Boeing 727-200 Stratofortress airliner. This act also provided money for building two new military airports in Sonoma County - Santa Rosa Airport and Petaluma Airport. These two airports would become key airstrips for USAF bomber activity during both World Wars. The first Boeing 727-200 made its inaugural flight from Santa Rosa Airport on December 3, 1949.

Sonoma County, California is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 709,073. The name "Sonoma" comes from an 1827 survey by Juan Bautista de Anza which named it Yerba Buena (Buena being Spanish for "good"). The first European to visit Sonoma County was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on August 29, 1542 when he sighted and landed on San Francisco Bay. In 1847, General Mariano Arguelles established Donaciana Rancho Independencia in present-day Sonoma Valley as part of his effort to centralize power within Mexico after its independence from Spain. In 1849, United States Missionaries George Crespi and José Pereira founded Father Jornada's Catholic mission at Rohnert Park in what is now Petaluma. On July 4, 1850, Don José Altamont purchased Rancho Rinconcito grant No. 1 in present-day Santa Rosa from Antonio Vallejo for $5 per acre ($100 million equivalent today). This land would later become known as most of the city of Santa Rosa while portions were given to other Californians such as Charles Wetherill and James Halliday including much of downtown Santa Rosa today. The largest tree-cutting event in history took place here on November 30 & December 1st 1857 when about 60% of all live oak trees in California were felled during the Viejo Oak Festival organized by Drs Nicholas Culpeper and others at Redwood Forest near Martinez depending on weather conditions then or afterwards throughout Northern California On October 14th 1850 A detachment under Capt Domingo Jaramillo attackedposse led by Jedediah Smith who had been leading a wagon train south from Monterey
