Sonoma is a small but growing city in the Sonoma Valley of Northern California. The city covers an area of just over square miles, and as of the 2010 census, it had a population of 491 people. The Sonoma County seat is Petaluma. The namesake for Sonoma was General Montgomery Scott who fought in the Mexican-American war and served as a brigadier general in the United States army under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1875, he founded what is now known as Monterey County and named his new county after Scott's home state of Virginia. In 1876, Jesse Livermore moved to Sonoma from San Francisco and began to grow grapes for wine production. He became one of the most successful winegrowers in California and his winery still stands today on Hwy 101 near modern day Santa Rosa. During Prohibition,Sonoma became one of only a few communities in California to remain dry during prohibition because they could generate their own drinking water without running into government or private supplies

The Dutch introduced pressurized water systems to roast their coffee, which made it more expensive but also created a better flavor. In 1837, Swiss immigrants started roasting their own coffee in their homes. The Swiss became masters of roasted coffees, and they exported them all over the world. From here on out, different countries began to specialize in specific types of coffee beans or roasts – this is how we got our current gourmet coffee culture.

Sonoma County is a small, agricultural county located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 517,329 at the 2010 census. Sonoma had been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years and first appeared on maps in 1769. The first permanent European settlement in Sonoma County was Beale's Station, built on an estate of Mission San Francisco de Asís by Captain George Beale in 1827. In 1848, gold was discovered near Petaluma and began to be mined. This led to rapid growth in the area around Petaluma and Santa Rosa as industry developed. A local ordinance granted land east of Petaluma to settlers on June 3, 1850 from Nicholas Blythe and Elijah Stroud; this included present-day Petaluma and part of Santa Rosa. With goldmining becoming increasingly difficult to achieve and production limits being set by Union Pacific Railroad officials due to safety concerns, many miners turned their attention to oil discoveries nearby at Benicia Bayou and Napa River Ranchos during the early 20th century. By 1915 over 50 percent of all oil production in California came from Sonoma County
Sonoma County was formed on February 15, 1853 from the merger of Napa and Santa Cruz Counties. The county is named for George Bancroft Sonoma, a British settler who founded what is now Marin County in 1795.
