Sonoma is a small town in Sonoma County, California. It is located on the west side of the San Francisco Peninsula and lies at an elevation of 5,000 feet (1,500 meters). The population was 10,652 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward metropolitan area. The name "Sonoma" comes from two different places: one meaning "place where grapes grow" and another meaning "valley of the Sonnini." In 1808, John Timbrel discovered winegrowing potential in what is now Sonoma County. Early winemaking operations were conducted by French Huguenot settlers who named their valley after themselves - Château Margaux became Napa Valley while Vallejo became Sonoma Valley. The first recorded sale of wine in Sonoma occurred in 1825. In 1847, Mission Santa Clara was founded near modern-day Petaluma and began operation as a mission colony for Catholic missionaries. Father Junipero Serra arrived here in 1849 to found Our Lady's School which later became Santa Clara University. Father Serra also established a vineyard here called Rancho Rincon de las Nieves which produced some of California's earliest Zinfandel wines. During World War II, many jobs were created in defense plants such as shipyards and aircraft manufacturing; however, no significant vineyards were developed around these facilities due to lack of available land or technology at that time. Sonoma is a small town in northern California, located about an hour's drive from San Francisco. The community has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and the first European tosight the area was Gaspar de Portolà on October 2, 1769. The name Sonoma likely comes from the Ahwahnee Mountains which dominate the community. In 1848, gold was discovered in what would become Sonoma County and a rush of settlers followed. By 1860 there were over 100 families living in Sonoma County. Today, Sonoma is known for its wine production and as a center for art and culture. The region that now includes Sonoma County was originally used for agricultural purposes by Native Americans. After European settlement began, land rights were claimed by various groups including Missionaries of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (1809-1811) who founded Mission Santa Rosa de Asis on the site of present-day Petaluma. On February 14th, 1850, Gold Rush miners arrived at Fort Ross Landing near Red Bluff and began looking for strikes while supplies still continued to be brought upriver by boatloads from Sacramento. The area became known as “Gold Mines Valley” because so much gold had been found there since 1849 when prospectors first started digging holes in the soft red earth near Folsom Lakebed! On July 25th Presidio Captain James Hahn ordered all men under his command to leave their positions at Folsom until further notice because he feared they might be attacked by Mexican forces advancing downstream! About 50 men managed to make it back to their lines before being driven out again two days later after several Mexican cannon shots missed them while they dug! On September 1st Joaquin Miller set off an explosives charge inside Lassen Peak which destroyed part of a mountain blocking access to what would become Bodega Bay today’s Stanislaus National Forest!! A few weeks later claiming ownership of these wildfires Lieutenant Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued a proclamation ordering all those responsible for setting off these fires be punished!
