The Sons of the American Revolution National Guard was organized on November 15, 1776. The first unit to be activated was Company D of the Sonoma County Volunteers from Petaluma. The regiment was redesignated as the 1st Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry on July 1, 1846. On November 9, 1850, the regiment was again redesignated as the 8th Regiment, California Volunteer Infantry and became part of the National Guard in Sonoma County.
Sonoma is a small town in California, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco on the Sonoma Coast. The population was 8,487 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Petaluma to the south and north, Santa Rosa to the northeast, and Rohnert Park to the northwest. The town's ZIP code is 95482. The name Sonoma comes from Spanish meaning "Island of the Sun." In 1836 or 1837, Jedediah Smith discovered gold near present-day Sonoma Valley. By 1840, many other prospectors had found significant quantities of gold in this area as well and development began rapidly around Fort Bragg on Mount Shasta. In 1849–1850 a group of European Americans founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís (later known as Santa Clara) on land that now forms part of downtown Berkeley. This mission served as a training ground for missionaries and their Native American assistants who were tasked with converting member nations of Northern California into Christianity. In 1852 Don José Maria Orozco y Uribe assumed control of Mission Santa Clara de Asís from his predecessor Father Fernando Hurtado y Mendoza. He named it after his father’s estate in Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain which he had inherited in 1850 upon his father’s death. Don José then proceeded to extensive renovation and enlargement of the original Missions buildings – an undertaking that cost $1 million dollars ($ in 2008). On July 4th 1860 Mexican troops burned down two churches adjoining Mission Santa Clara de Asís during an uprising against Orozco’s rule; however Don José rebuilt both structures within weeks using local redwood timbers so they could withstand future attacks (the mission still stands today). After years of growth and prosperity under Orozco’s auspices, Mexico achieved its independence from Spain on November 25th 1821 following a series of conflicts culminating with Battle Of Placerville which ended Spanish rule over most western California including Marin County including Presidio San Francisco (San Francisco Bay Area) – making Sonoma County independent too! A post office called Sebastopol was established at what is nowosite Sebastopol Avenue in 1862; it changed its name to Sonoma City in 1865 due to censure from Congress for having no connection with either Sacramento or San Francisco proper! When statehood was granted to California on January 3rd 1850, Sonoma became one of 17 counties included within the newly created State of California! Bicycling has been popular throughout much OFC history but really took off hereabouts beginning about ‘70 or so when people began biking all over America insteadof just SF bay Area & Peninsula areas
