The firstSonoma Maritime Museum was founded in 1906 by Rear Admiral John A. Dickson, who was then serving as Commandant of Marines at Monterey Naval Station. The museum is dedicated to honoring Sonoma County's maritime history and displaying artifacts from throughout the county's maritime history including old torpedoes, trading vessels, and more. In 1929, Rear Admiral Arthur Calkins donated land on which today’s Maritime Museum stands. This donation allowed for addition of a great many exhibits related to Sonoma County’s maritime heritage both before and after World War II. In 1966, Commodore James Biddle donated $10K towards construction of a new command center for the Marinette Island Naval Air Station (MINS). The new command center would serve as a home away from home for commanders stationed on Marinette Island during peacetime as well as wartime operations. The Commodore’s Gift also helped contribute to continued growth at MINS through donations from other citizens and businesses alike. In 1984, Commodore Biddle again contributed money towards construction of an annex to MINS that would house additional defense equipment along with offices for squadron commanders and support staff members during peacetime as well as wartime operations activity ashore on Marinette Island - this annex is now known simply as “The Annex”! In 1992 another Commodore’s Gift - this time $20K - helped fund renovation of parade ground adjacent to MINS that currently houses our recessed loading dock/catwalk area utilized by surface fleet Sailors when visiting our facility! And finally in 2009 yet another Commodore’s Gift – this one totaling $30K – helped finance expansion of our restaurant complex adjacent to MINS that now includes both a gymnasium & library! These recent generous contributions have continue aiding in ongoing growth at MINS while also supporting numerous civic initiatives withinSonoma County!

Sonoma County, California is located in Northern California and is named after the Spanish word "sonoma," meaning “sweet-smelling valley.” The county was first formed on February 3, 1850 from parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Sonoma has a population of over 215,000 people and is the most populous county in Northern California. Thecounty covers an area of 612 square miles (1,855 km2) with a population density of 198 people per square mile (77/km2). Sonoma County was one of the original U.S. counties created during the Mexican-American War when all but Silicon Valley became part of Mexico. In 1848, American settlers founded what would become Sonoma County, naming it for General José María Santa Anna y Costilla who had been president of Mexico at the time. The early pioneers in Sonoma were farmers and their families who arrived between 1849 and 1852. They started out on small plots near by where they still live today. Pioneers such as John Sutter built homes along Mission Creek which flows through town. Others such as Nathan Hale began farming in areas that now include Petaluma and Rohnert Park before moving to larger farms outside town beginning in the late 1800s. In 1861, gold was discovered at Suttle Point just east of downtown San Francisco while prospectors were working the nearby Atascadero Gold RushGold discoveries continued until 1865 when mining ceased because of low grades found at various sites including Geyserville due to heavy rains during that year's flood event which destroyed many claims along Mission Creek

Sonoma is a small city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Sonoma Coast along the Pacific Ocean. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sonoma County were Spanish missionaries and fur traders in 1769-1770. In 1812, Russians founded Sebastopol, then known as Point Lobos, and began trading with Native Americans here. In 1837, American Commodore John Denny surveyor named this area Rancho Petaluma after General James K. Polk's survey of California's coast in 1836. A post office called Petaluma was established in 1853, and remained open until it closed in 1961. In 1860s when Northern Californians began arriving for the Gold Rush, they built many small houses around Point Reyes lighthouse for their workers who mined gold there during the rush; some remain standing to this day. One of these buildings became the home of Mark Twain while he wrote "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". The townspeople did not want to leave their beautiful coastal town behind and voted 9-1 on November 3rd 1870 to incorporation into Marin County as an unincorporated community under the name "Newport Beach." However, by 1888 Newport Beach had outgrown its growing pains so much that it decided to secede from Marin County and become an independent city itself with its own government – which we still have today! On July 16th 1890 New Westminster (now Sausalito) also seceded from Marin County and became an independent city separate from San Francisco proper although both cities shared a few blocks between them until 1960 when they were annexed back into San Francisco again! By 1895 most of what makes up modern Sonoma Counties had been developed: new homes were being erected along Highway 101 including much of present-day Petaluma; men worked land nearPoint Reyes lighthouse; timber production increased; winegrowing began around Napa Valley; cheese production increased as well as numerous other cottage industries typical of those times such as weaving baskets or making china
