South El Monte, California is a city in southern Los Angeles County. The population was 26,052 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and is bordered by Encino to the north and east, Vernon to the south, and unreached portions of Glendale to the west. South El Monte also borders Carson City in Nevada. In 1881, José María Serrano founded what would become South El Monte with land he had acquired from Juan Bautista Alvarado in Rancho San Miguel de las Palmas. The growth of South El Monte was due to its location along two major transportation routes: Santa Monica Boulevard served as an important artery for trade between Southern California and Northern Mexico; and Canoga Park Boulevard provided easy access to both developed areas of town and open space that attracted new residents. By 1925, when it became part of Los Angeles County, South El Mono had a population of 27 people living in 17 businesses. SouthElMontezas first store opened in 1885. The Strauss family also built the first school in South El Monte. In 1905, the town of South El Monte merged with neighboring city of Monterrey. In 1916, SouthElMontezas became the county seat for Los Angeles County. In 1936, North Hollywood was annexed into SouthElMontezas and it became one municipality until 1959 when it was dissolved as a result of an annexation referendum that was won by Los Angeles City instead.
