The history of the South El Monte Army and Navy Club goes back to 1898. The club was organized as a means of providing officers and enlisted men in the military with social and recreational opportunities. During World War I, the club sponsored several golf tournaments for military personnel in Southern California. In 1933, the club became defunct due to financial difficulties; however, it was reactivated in 1945 by then-Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. James Fenton. The club ceased operations again in 1948, but was reinstated two years later under newly elected Mayor Harry Bridges. By 1957, the club had become an all-volunteer organization with over 1,000 members located throughout Southern California. Since its inception, the South El Monte Army and Navy Club has donated more than $200,000 to various charities and organizations including United Way of Southern California; American Cancer Society; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; City of South El Monte Parks & Recreation Department; Santa Monica Pier Authority; Boys & Girls Clubs of America/Los Angeles County chapter; Goodwill Industries International/South El Monte;; National Guard Bureau Regional Command Headquarters/El Mirage); Red Cross Blood Drive (1981-1986); Alzheimer’s Association (1991-1992); Presbyterian Church USA (1993-1994).

In 1926, South El Monte became one of thirty-six townships within California's newly created Los Angeles County. The population of South El Monte grew rapidly during the late 20th century, resulting in numerous development projects throughout the town including a new shopping mall, schools, and other infrastructure improvements. However, many residents objected to increased traffic and noise from industrial plants in the area. In 1997, South El Monte voters passed a resolution opposing plans for a large new shopping mall in the town; however, the project continued to be planned and developed anyway. In recent years, South El Monte has seen renewed growth as a bedroom community for Los Angeles County; however, some longtime residents remain concerned about future developments in the area."
