South El Monte, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 27,826 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County and the third-largest city in Los Angeles County after L.A. and Orange County. The first Europeans to visit South El Monte were Spanish explorers who came ashore on March 14, 1769 near what is now known as Point Mugu and named it Rancho Santa Anita. The area that would become South El Monte was part of Rancho San Gabriel until 1810 when Mexico ceded it to United States control as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson ordered all Mexican property east of the River Pecos be forfeited to US citizens because of their ownership by Mexico; this included most of Los Angeles County including South El Monte which remained with Mexico until 1848. In 1849, following Mexican independence from Spain, Juan Bautista Alvarado foundedel Portal de las Palmas (the Gateway), a trading post on the south bank of the Verdugos River near present-day Desert View Boulevard and Interstate 15 about four miles away from town center on donated land grant from Mission Santa Catalina de la Purísima Concepción de Jesus y Diez Martires). Alvarado served as interim governor during Mexican rule before becoming president of Chihuahua upon its independence from Mexico in1821. In 1853, the town of South El Monte was founded by Mormon settlers. The town had a population of about seventy-five people when it was founded. The first post office in South El Monte was established in 1859. It served as the first stop on stagecoach routes between Los Angeles and San Bernardino. The town grew rapidly, and by 1880, it had a population of two hundred people.South El Monte became an incorporated city in 1912. In 1958, it merged with the neighboring city of Lancaster to form the City of Lancaster. In 1990, South El Monte again merged with Lancaster to become the City of Lancaster and Mountain View is now split between these two cities as well.
The area now known as South El Monte was once part of the old missions of Frio, San Gabriel and Monterey. The first mission in this area was founded in 1777 by Father Francisco Gutierrez. After a few years it moved to its current location near what is now called East El Monte. In 1821, the friars decided to move their mission south to what is now known as Pico Rivera because of the increasing population density in that area. The friars also built a small chapel there which they used for services until 1845 when they moved to Mission Dolores on Alameda Street. In 1852, following Mexican Independence, South El Monte became part of the United States after Mexico ceded it to America.
