South El Monte, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 41,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger city of El Monte. The area now known as South El Monte was first inhabited by Mono peoples and tribes who lived there for centuries before European settlers arrived in 1765. The first white man to set foot on the land that now makes up South El Monte was Captain John B Riley in 1846. He made an attempt to establish a Rancho San Gabriel which would later become part of Rancho Santa Anita. In 1870, Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza led a force of soldiers and settlers into what is now Southern California searching for new land to explore and claimed much of what is now Los Angeles County and southern Riverside County including present-day South El Monte. After finding no suitable sites within his original discoveries, Anza abandoned contact with the local Mono people and relocated them to Mission San Fernando Rey de Buenaventura near downtown Los Angeles. By 1875, over 25 families had settled here including many from Northern Mexico who had come seeking refuge during the Mexican Revolution. In 1886 following passage of law providing for annexation of all but two Mexican states into the United States, property values in this unincorporated area increased so rapidly that adobe dwellings were built on acreage already owned by citizens thereof without consent or compensation from those owning parcels outside the newly annexed boundaries; thus began one of Southern Californias most dramatic land rushes when subdivisions were offered free or low cost along railroads leading to new towns developments across valley floor

South El Monte is a city in the United States located in Ventura County, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. It is part of the Greater LA Area. As of 2017, it had a population of over 100,000 people. The name "South El Monte" means "east of the mountain." The city was founded by Spanish colonists as Rancho Seco de la Brea (later renamed South El Monte) in 1853. The first post office in South El Monte was established on November 12, 1854, and opened under the name Villa del Carmen. In 1870, South ElMonte became an incorporated town with a population of about 20 residents. In 1912, SouthElMonte annexed what is now Callahan Heights to its south side; this annexation resulted from calls for incorporation from both sides of Town Line Road which separated Orange County from Los Angeles County at that time. A new water tower was built in 1923 and named for Judge Augustus Ewing who donated land for it; he also funded two other water towers in nearby Canoga Park and Northridge. In 1929–1930 there were several riots along with other problems related to prohibition during America's Great Depression. In 1934–1935 SouthElMonte annexed what is now Monterrey Hills and most notably Tower Hill which backed up against Los Angeles City Hall until finally being solved by demolishing City Hall and rebuilding it as a home park for local children while their parents shopped downtown or took long walks around adjacent hillsides bordered by Canoga Park Boulevard to northbound Interstate 5 near Glendale Boulevard
