In 1847, a group of land developers called the Irvine Company founded what would become South El Monte. The area was then known as Rancho San Bernardino de las Pulgas and was part of the Rinconada Mission District. In 1850, the company sold 80 acres to José Alvarado and Manuel Nieto for $10 per acre. In 1852, Alvarado built a small house on the property and named it Villa Guerrero. The following year, he added another small house, which became known as Villa del Carmen. In 1856, Alvarado sold 300 acres to José Gomez for $40 per acre. Gomez built a small hacienda on the property and named it Villa de las Pulgas. He also developed an irrigation system on the property that allowed him to grow grapes in sufficient quantity to export processing wine from his vineyards to various markets around California. In 1861, Gomez sold the remaining lands in South El Monte to Antonio Agustín Cisneros for $60 per acre. Cisneros founded what would become La Cañada Flintridge in 1870 and developed some of its earliest development properties including Isla Verde and La Mesa de la Cañada Flintridge (now Elmhurst). He also started importing goods from Europe and selling them at local stores in order to support his businesses. Between 1880-1920, La Cañada Flintridge produced over 4 million pieces of cheese annually (more than any other Californian cheese production facility) which helped contribute significantly to its economy and society
