South El Monte, California is a city in the Antelope Valley region of Southern California on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The population was 20,826 at the 2010 census. It lies south of Palm Springs and east of Victorville. The first Europeans to visit what is now South El Monte were Spanish missionaries in 1769, and they named it San Gabriel after the Archangel Gabriel. The area was first inhabited by Gabrielino Indians before Mexican troops invaded in 1846 and took over control. In 1851, General Don José Montero reported finding gold near what is now South El Monte. Mining operations began here soon afterward as settlers arrived from all over southern California to find land that could be worked for gold. By 1870, most alluvial gold had been mined out and it became an agricultural center with cattle ranching as its mainstay. A large number of African Americans came to work in this area during segregation times; many worked on ranches and other businesses until integration occurred in 1965. Since then, South El Monte has undergone several surges of growth due to its location near various highways including Interstate 15 and State Route 110 (SR 110), which have led to increased industrial activity within the city limits as well as suburban development nearby. The City Council approved a $25 million budget surplus for 2016-17 thanks largely to these trends! South El Monte, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,582 at the 2010 census. South El Monte is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It began as an agricultural community in 1901 and became a town in 1912 with its own government and school system. It has since been through several transformations: from a low-income working-class neighborhood to one of the most affluent areas in the county; from rural to suburban; and from Spanish-speaking to English-speaking neighborhoods. The earliest inhabitants of what is now South El Monte were Native American people who lived near present day Antelope Valley and East Mojave National Preserve. In 1846 Mexican Americans founded Rancho Niguel north of what is today South El Monte on land that had been claimed by both tribes. The rancho was named for José Gabriel Nigueras, a wealthy Mexican immigrant who had bought it from James Mooney in 1845. José’s brother Fernando also purchased some adjacent lands including parts of what are now Northridge and Loma Linda Streets south ofpresent day Buchanan Boulevard In 1853 Jose married Maria de la Cruz Baca, sister of Diego Rivera y Baca, one of Mexico's most famous politicians and art collectors. They moved to Rancho Niguel where they raised their family until 1868 when they decided to move back east because they found living near friends (osoquito Indians) difficult enough without having to worry about them coming into view while hunting or fishing on their property
