During World War II, many American military personnel and their families moved into South El Monte after being ordered to move into other parts of San Bernardino County because of the high rates of unemployment here during that time period. The community experienced another growth spurt following World War II when steel mills opened up along Interstate 15 near present-day Northridge and nearby Riverside Counties which soon attracted engineers and manufacturers who created jobs in new factories and plants while also adding people to South El Monte's growing population. The 1950s saw a decline in manufacturing employment but a resurgence starting around 1990 with new development projects such as shopping malls and professional offices becoming popular here due to its close proximity to major metropolitan areas throughout Southern California as well as its infrastructure including expressways, schools, hospitals and parks

In 1876, the United States purchased Rancho Santa Anita from José Agustín de la Hoz. The land extended from present-day South El Monte to the border of San Bernardino County. In 1880, the U.S. Post Office was established in South El Monte and mail was brought into the area by stagecoach. The first school in South El Monte opened in 1892, but there were no students until 1912 when Mrs. Ethel Laughlin began teaching a girls’ school on North Main Street. In 1913, after World War I ended, the United States acquired an additional parcel of rancho Santa Anita lands east of present-day Eastover Road and built a military airfield on it known as Camp Edwards (later Camp Roberts). The airfield became home to many American aircraft during World War II including B-17 Flying Fortresses and P-51 Mustang fighters of the Eighth Air Force and Ninth Air Force respectively. In 1949, Southern Pacific Railway opened its mainline through South El Monte making it easier for people to get around town and beyond by car or bus. Today,South El Monte is one of Southern California's most populous communities with over 100,000 residents living within its boundaries
