In 1915 South ElMonte became an incorporated municipality with a population of 30 residents. Huge amounts of oil were found at Kern River Oil Field during World War I which led to rapid growth in businesses and jobs throughout South El Monte; however, this prosperity also led to some problems such as high housing prices that continue to plague the city today. South El Monte, California was founded on February 14, 1887 by James Irvine and his brother John Irvine. The town was named in honor of General Carlos Mesa who fought in the Mexican-American War. South El Monte grew rapidly during the early years of its incorporation, becoming a small farming community with only ten residents in 1893. However, because of its location at the southern end of San Gabriel Valley, South El Monte quickly became a popular agricultural center for settlers and businessmen interested in having access to fertile land and easy transportation. During World War I, South El Monte played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its proximity to Los Angeles and its excellent production facilities for aircraft engines, ammunition, and other munitions products. In 1928, South El Monte became part of the newly created city of Los Angeles. During the late 1920s and 1930s, South El Monte experienced significant growth as a result of new development initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Edward J. Kinghorn and City Councilman Don Webb. These initiatives included the construction of several large housing estates which increased population density while also providing more jobs for locals; the founding of two high schools (Elmont High School and Notre Dame High School); and the addition of several shopping malls which helped spur economic development throughout Southern California. By 1941, when World War II began (and after months of planning), South El Monte had become one of the most heavily militarized communities inSouthern California thanks to its location within easy reachof military installations statewide as well as its importance as a major hub for wartime trade. In 1945 Englishman Dickenson opened his first grocery store in south elmont - this was followed by another store on Glenoaks Boulevard just north of Interstate 5 shortly thereafter - this initiated what would become an intensive retail development program that eventually served over 1 million customers annually across nineteen stores throughout south elmont by 1971. The post-war boom led to even greater growth during these years; however, it was not until 1978 thatsouth elmonte established itself as one of Southern California’s leading commercial areas with multiple high-end malls such as Northridge mall (later renamed Microsoft Park) and Lankershim mall opening along with numerous smaller shops throughout downtown south elmont
In 1847, the Mexican government ceded California to the United States. The area that now includes South El Monte was part of Alta California. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Mexico surrendered and became a U.S. territory. In 1912, South El Monte was incorporated into Los Angeles County as one of its original regions.
