South El Monte, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 43,391 as of the 2010 census. South El Monte is the largest city in San Bernardino County and the 12th-largest city in Los Angeles County. It is also one of three cities located within the incorporated area of Bakersfield—the other two being Chula Vista and West Covina. The first Europeans to visit what is now South El Monte were Jesuit missionaries who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on October 24, 1795. The mission was abandoned in 1814 while Mexican forces were fighting against Californios under Colonel Antonio López de Santa Anna. Spanish settlers began arriving in earnest after 1821 when it became part of Mexican Alta California Province. In 1825, Mexican Governor José Joaquín Murrieta created Los Angeles County from land that had been granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado for his Rancho Cucamonga and named it after Saint John the Baptist (John Boswell), patron saint of travelers journeying through Southern California. In 1832–33, cattle drives brought thousands of Anglo Americans to ranchos near Ojo Caliente and Agua Dulce where they traded goods withMexican ranchers and built small towns such as Azusa around them for about a decade before returning East during the Gold Rush period (1848-1853). On February 14, 1850, at Palo Alto Station on the Union Pacific Railroad south of campus at USC Law School – then known as University College – students revolted against their college’s tuition hikes which were making way for federal funds to support agricultural colleges across America. On March 3 they burned Seminary Hall; soon afterwards an additional building called “Avenue J” was destroyed by angry students despite offers by UC president James Bowker to provide them with a new building if they would only calm down. This episode helped create or popularize local legend that future presidents George Washington Carver and Franklin D Roosevelt attended law school there during those years (although these assertions are not supported by evidence). South El Monte saw its first professional football game on November 2nd 1903 vs Pitzer College when both teams played using natural grass fields northeast of town along Park Road just east of Interstate 65 between Sylmar Boulevard and Broadway Avenue north of I-5/US 101 junction near Victorville; Pitzer won 16-0 under very difficult playing conditions including five players caught cold on kickoff return from halfway back which slowed play so much that fourth string quarterback Harry Sayer completed only four passes for 95 yards before being replaced by Dutch Schultz with less than five minutes remaining giving Pitzer its third win over USC since 1901 (and second consecutive victory over UCLA) despite losing starting quarterback Herb Monkman who later died from a heart attack while competing in an amateur golf tournament at Pasadena Hills Country Club two days earlier.. In 1905 USC hired coach Amos Ross who led them to their first Intercollegiate Championship game against Occidental University where USC defeated Occidental 44-6 becoming the first team ever to win both intercollegiate championships held simultaneously at USC! Today USC participates annually in bowl games sponsored by NFL teams such as New England Patriots (2011), Baltimore Ravens (2012), Carolina Panthers (2013) & Indianapolis Colts(2014). After World War II South El Monte's economy grew slowly due primarily to agriculture but has experienced significant growth lately thanks largely to HVAC installation projects throughout southern Riverside County following enactment of Proposition 13 requiring all unincorporated areas within San Bernardino County large enough economically established para

In 1847, South El Monte was founded by the Mexican American community. The town quickly became a major trading center for goods coming from the Central Valley and the San Joaquin Valley. In 1913, South El Monte was incorporated as a city. Today, South El Monte is a thriving community with a rich history that can be seen in its many businesses and homes. South El Monte's roots go back to 1847 when the Mexican American community of workers from central California arrived to help build the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town quickly became an important commercial hub, hosting stores and businesses such as J.L. Pepper's grocery store, Wagon Wheel Brewery, and Pinto Cheese Factory. By 1913, South El Monte had become home to over 10,000 citizens and was one of California's largest cities. Today, South El Monte is an active member of both the City Council and Mayoralty levels; it has been called "the most diverse city in Los Angeles County." Its rich cultural heritage is evident in its many businesses and residences - some of which are still standing today! One example is Chavez Ravine Elementary School - which has been rebuilt multiple times since it opened in 1912 as part of Citywide restoration efforts spearheaded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D). This school also features murals created by local artist John Munch that celebrate Latino culture and Hispanic Heritage Month every June.
