South El Monte, California is a city in the Antelope Valley region of southern California. The population was 23,857 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is adjacent to the cities of Lancaster and Glendale. The name "South El Monte" comes from Spanish meaning "south of the mountains". Polk visited this area while exploring San Diego Bay as part of his northern Borderlands Expedition and noted that there were no mountain ranges visible to him but he could see many valleys running southward into Southern California. The first known permanent resident in South El Monte was José Joaquín Balboa who founded what is now Balboa Heights in 1848. In 1862, Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa raided the town and killed nine people including Mayor Manuel Nieto before being driven out by American forces under General John Pershing. That year, South El Monte also became part of rgb United States Army District 8 which encompassed all parts of southern California east of Pasadena. In 1912, when Orange County was created from portions of Los Angeles County, South El Monte became one of its original cities within that new county. The population increased rapidly after World War II due to military housing developments (such as Greenbelt) built near defense Plant 2 outside present-day downtown South El Monte during World War II and later following atomic testing in nearby Hanford National Laboratory; however, it has since declined somewhat due to commuting problems caused by increasingly large metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and Anaheim Hills outside SouthElMonte's boundaries.(See list below for more information).
