Since the early 1900s, South El Monte has been a center for coffee production. Today, the city is home to one of the largest and most well-known coffee roasters in the country, Blue Bottle Coffee. Thecoffee industry began in South El Monte as small-scale farmers grew coffee trees on their properties. By the late 1800s, however, larger plantations had taken over much of what was once rural south El Monte. This change led to a decline in small-scale coffee production and an increase in large plantation agriculture. As large plantations became more prevalent and expensive to maintain, smaller farmers turned to coffee production as a way to survive. In 1916, Willie Baca started up his own small farm near today’s Blue Bottle Coffee property. Baca’s farm continued to produce coffee until 1978 when it was sold to JBS Coffee Corporation. At that point, South El Monte transitioned from being a center for small-scale farming into an important player in the global coffee market. Since its inception at Blue Bottle Coffee, South ElMonte has become a central hub for espresso and cappuccino production around the world. In 1961, Gus Fink and his brother-in-law, Don Deutch, opened the first small batch coffee shop in South El Monte. The shop was located on Pico Boulevard in El Monte. In 1967, Gus Fink and his wife founded the second small batch coffee shop in South El Monte. The store was located on Central Avenue. In 1988, the third small batch coffee shop was founded by Don Deutch and his wife. The store was located on Aguilar Street in South El Monte.

South El Monte is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 62,491 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The town was founded by Mormon settlers in 1847 on what is now the east side of Interstate 5 south of downtown Los Angeles. The name was chosen to reflect the company's belief that "the sun never sets on the Valley" because it would be one day a separate county within southern California. When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Mexican land grants were made available to American citizens who could prove their ancestry by settlement in any U.S.-controlled territory east of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains during Mexican rule (1821-1848). In 1847, the Santa Fe Railroad was completed and began serving South El Monte. The town grew rapidly as people came to connect with the new transportation system. In 1865, South El Monte became an incorporated city with its own government.
