South Gate, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,642. The name "South Gate" originated from the Spanish words "suelta gate," meaning "to cross." South Gate is located on Interstate 10 and is about an hour's drive away from downtown Los Angeles. The first settlers to what is now South Gate were farmers who arrived in 1853. They named their land Rancho Santa Anita after the estate of actress Sarah Bernhardt which they had passed through on their way to sell produce to cattle ranchers in nearby Menlo Park. The town was founded by John Latham in 1892 as a result of his purchase of 640 acres (240 hectares) from pioneer citrus grower Rufus Lambdin. Latham built a store and post office on his property which he named Southgate Village after himself and his wife Amanda Keyes de la Luz y Pacheco. In 1923, following annexation by Los Angeles County, Southgate Village became part of the new city of Los Angeles. Lombardin left Southgate Village for good in 1925 when he sold his holdings to developer William Mulholland Jr.. While Mulholland continued to operate various businesses within the village including a fruit stand and grocery store, much of its infrastructure was destroyed during World War II when Southern California was bombed heavily by Japan as part of their military campaign known as Operation Olympic). After the war ended and most businesses closed down due to lack of demand or competition from larger cities such as Los Angeles or Beverly Hills, mulholland reopened the business with help from local civic officials including Mayor Edwin Sargent and Councilwoman Esther Gruenberg before selling it again in 1951 to H B Cook Incorporated who operated it until 1984 before being closed down again by bankruptcy that year When City Hall moved from its original location at 5th Street & Spring Avenue into more recent digs on State Route 442 just south of La Brea Avenue in 1986, much old-time commercial signage still remainsposted inside City Hall; many thanks goes out to longtime preservationists Bobbi Kriegler (& Emmett O’Keefe) for her tireless efforts over many years maintaining this important cultural legacy! With so few residents remaining within sight or reach outside elected officials (fewer than 20 people registered with city government as Ofcom reported at any given time during 2009), planning for future services began long before most residents even realized there existed such a thing as an Office Of Planning & Development!
