South Gate is located on the banks of the River Conejo and is close to both Interstate 10 and State Route 138 (the former route of U.S. Route 66). South Gate was founded in 1879 by J.D. Payne as a small trading post on Rancho Conejo Mexican land south of Los Angeles City Limits. In 1887, Payne donated 640 acres (250 ha) to the city of Victorville for use as a parkway called South Gate Parkway which run parallel to present-day I-10 and State Route 138. Payne's daughter, Lillie Payne Welty served as Mayor from 1990 until her retirement in 2006 Today, SouthGate celebrates its 150th anniversary with many events throughout the year including numerous community meetings attended by residents and business owners where policies are discussed and solutions are put into place for issues facing the town such as crime, infrastructure needs and renewable energy sources The town also has several attractions that include an amusement park known as Six Flags Magic Mountain; two shopping malls; a golf course; an opera house; three cultural theaters including The Players Theatre); three water parks - one known as Splash Valley Park; two ballparks - one just east of town near Interstate 10 called "Green Gables" and another west of town near State Route 138 called "Cedar Rapids"; multiple restaurants including Olive Garden, Jack In The Box, Panda Express, KFC and Subway.; two stadiums used during local high school football games: One opened in 1934 adjacent to Six Flags Magic Mountain while anotheropened in 1984 adjacent to Shopping Mall West It's estimated that over $40 million has been spent on investments within Southgate sincenetting annexation by Victorville in 1959 when it became part of Metro City Redevelopment Agency which governed all aspects related to growth within Victorville not just southbound I-10 but northbound SR 138
When the United States Air Force was formed in 1947, it had only three planes. By 1958, the USAF had more than 30,000 active duty and reserve personnel. The first real exercise using an F-94 Starfighter took place on 1 September 1949 when eight F-94s from Patrick AFB, Florida participated in a flypast of Baltimore's Inner Harbor during its July Fourth celebrations. In 1957, Republic Aviation Corporation donated three McDonnell Douglas MD-1D Dash 8 aircraft (later upgraded to McDonnell Douglas MD-2H) to the USAF for use in aerial refueling operations over Vietnam. Although these airplanes did not serve in combat due to their poor fuel performance, they became known as The Flying Monkeys because of their propensity for getting lost in thick clouds of fuel vapors while flying over North Vietnam! In 1979, Washington Mutual Group donated six Grumman F9F Hellfires fighter jets to be used by Air National Guard units throughout southern California; these jets would provide covering fire for ground forces engaging militants opposing Ulysses S. Grant Park's construction near Los Angeles International Airport! This was one of the most significant donations ever made by an American company to any country during peacetime! In 1993, General Dynamics Weapons Systems Company donation included sixteen MQM6 Hunter Missiles delivers directly into USAF hangars at Tyndall AFB Florida; this launchers would be used for launching precision munitions against targets inside Iraq! A total of 108 missiles were delivered through ten shipments! On 15 February 1994 twelve AGM-114 HARM smart bombs were delivered fromthirteen AGM Sites located throughout Southwest Asia delivering destructive firepower against major military objectives including airfields and troop concentrations
