In 1861, when Confederate troops invaded Southern California, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his forces to march toward South Gate. However, due to heavy rains and flooding that had occurred earlier in the year, few roads existed in southern California suitable for fighting. As a result, Santa Anna's forces had to march through open countryside instead. Despite being outnumbered three-to-one by Confederate troops at battle field level (15000 men versus 9000 men), South Gate's militia eventually managed to hold their ground until reinforcements arrived from Northern Californias. By 1862, however, Santa Anna's army had retreated back into Mexico City and what remained of his force surrendered at Cerro Gordo Ranch on October 25th of that year. This event marked the end of hostilities in California between both sides; it would be another decade before another major conflict would take place within America involving either side). The surrender also signified an end for military activity inSouthgate; since then it has been mostly peaceful until recently when there have been sporadic incidents related to drug smuggling or other illicit activities (ehem... lately there have been much more skirmishes between militaries). South Gate, California is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County. It was founded in 1887 by wagon drivers and their families who were migrating from central Mexico. The first permanent settlers were the Morrill family, who arrived in 1892. The name came from Spanish Gaviota meaning "gate" or "entrance." The town became an important stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad during its early days. On October 15, 1846, the Mexican government granted US citizens Juan Bautista Alvarado and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna permission to open a road from Sonoma County north to Monterey Bay. This route became known as the Humboldt Route. It is thought that the first Europeans to visit what is now South Gate were Missionaries of San Francisco in 1776. The land around present-day South Gate was part of Rancho Las Pulgas, which was given to José Joaquin Mora y Merino in 1821 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1847, a privateer named Eulalia Cruz landed at South Gate with goods for California gold seekers Pedro Fortunato Chávez and José Joaquín Murillo. On November 12, 1847, Chávez and Murillo set out from South Gate on horseback after receiving news of gold discoveries in Nevada and Oregon. They arrived atyoouthgate on January 6, 1848. The party traveled overland until they reached Lassen Volcanoes National Park on February 9; then they walked six days eastward over difficult terrain to reach their next camp near Mount Shasta on February 25. From there they continued marches northeastward through dense forest for about 175 miles before reaching Spanish Water Canyon (present day Willits) on March 10—the last stop before crossing the Coquimbo Range into California proper. There they spent two weeks prospecting for nuggets before withdrawing $2,000 worth of gold bullion back to Mexico City on April 24
