Brougham served as platoon sergeant with Company G during Custer’s final battle against Apache Indians at Blackwater Pass on October 6th 1868 near present day Alpine Meadows National Monument. After serving out his enlistment with Company G, Brougham resigned from the military on July 1st 1869 and returned to civilian life in San Francisco Bay Area where he lived until his death on December 4th 1896. A few weeks after his death, Captain Brougham’s battalion was awarded Congressional Gold Medal for their participation in General George Meade’s famous victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Creek on April 14th1865 which ended two years of conflict between Mexico and America During this time periodCaptain Brougham played an important role by leading stragglers into action along Palo Alto Creek resulting in one less enemy force opposing General Meade's army

South Gate (), also known as "Gate City" or simply "South Gate", is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 23,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Southgate comes from Rancho La Hacienda de Santa Anita (now part of the city of San Bernardino), which was given to Lieutenant Colonel John C. Fremont by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1853 for his services in suppressing Native American attacks on Mission Viejo and other missions near Los Angeles. South Gate originally consisted only of a small Indian trail leading east from this mission to Redlands and then north to Long Beach; it later grew into a town with over 20 buildings and an unincorporated area totaling . In 1886, two years after incorporation as a town, Mayor George Warton proposed that the community be named after General James Shields who had routed Mexican forces from Southern California during the Mexican–American War. This proposal was approved by voters and Shields became honorary mayor with powers similar to those currently held by Mayor Jeffrey Dahmer. In 1893, Southgate voted to secede from Riverside County because they felt their government did not appreciate their efforts in fighting Mexico's campaign against Ulysses S. Grant's American Invasion of Mexico (). On December 11th 1916 South gate citizens organized a boycott of all local businesses due to World War I shortages caused by America's entry into war without getting involved in its actual battle on the European front (the US entered neutrality). A monument honoring all Americans who have served our country can be found adjacent to Interstate 10 along Foster Avenue just south of SR 120/I-10 exit 133B (exit #1 off I-10)

South Gate is located in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, California. It was first settled by Spaniards in the 17th century and became a rancho (a Spanish term meaning "ranch") in 1854. The town was named after South Gate, a small village near Orange County, California which had been founded by Mission San Gabriel missionaries in 1827. In 1905, South Gate organized as an incorporated city and began to issue its own municipal bonds. In 1916, it amalgamated with neighboring Pasadena to form the new city of Pasadena. South Gate experienced rapid growth during World War II due to the munitions production at nearby Beaumont Army Ammunition Plant. However, when the plant closed in 1957, much of the town's population declined and its social services were discontinued. Today, only a few buildings from earlier years remain standing within downtown South Gate; most of these are museum buildings or used for housing. The history of South Gate can be traced back to 1798 when Spanish explorer José Antonio de Urraca discovered land that would eventually become south gate county. On September 24 of that year he arrived at what is now known as Rancho Santa Anita on what is now Gadsden Street east of Yorba Linda Boulevard (now Hollywood Boulevard). At first Urraca named his land Rancho Santa Anita but later changed it to Rancho El Cajon because he found some irrigation CANALS thereabouts which led him to believe that this could be used for cattleraising rather than farming purposes (the area was formerly part of pre-Mission San Gabriel Mission territory). In 1824 Juan José Ortega y Gasset explored what is now south gate county and named it Santa Ana del Oro after patron saint Anthony Aurelio; so north gate county became part of southern california on January 8th., 1825 under Mexican rule following American occupation In 1850 Englishman John Marshall visited Southern Californian soil for 1 month while prospecting for gold near Kern River before returning home with news that no gold had been located although he did find several streams rich enough for mining . Upon his return twenty miles southof present day south gate he erected a small adobe house called “Marshall’s House” about 2/3 mile SW from today’s intersection Yorba Linda Blvd & Gadsden St . He left one male servant behind who cooked his food and made bedding . After Marshall returned home on November 10th 1800 another Englishman called George Webber landed at Dana Point Harbor on December 12th 1800 with 5 men including Capt Cook also visiting this area prior to leaving England on December 9th 1800..
