It is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and it straddles the border between counties San Bernardino and Riverside. The name "South Gate" is derived from Spanish meaning "Gate of Peace." The first settlement in what became South Gate was made by Mormon pioneers who followed Brigham Young to California in 1847. The current town was founded by farmers who bought land east of Highway 60 in 1869. In 1916, South Gate had a population of 2,000 people and consisted only of a few homes. When World War I began, many Southern Californians came to fight because they saw war as their best opportunity for social mobility and economic opportunities. Many black Americans also enlisted in military units; some were given command roles while others worked as cooks or messengers. By 1919, Southgate had increased its population to 10,000 people and included several businesses including a grocery store and post office. In that year, Mayor John Hesselink approved plans to build a new civic center which would include an arena for sports events as well as public baths and other amenities for the community. During World War II most residents fled to northern California due to living conditions such as air raids and rationing which lasted into 1945 when most everyone returned home except those who were forced into exile pursuant to US Executive Order 9066 (the relocation order). Although much damage was done during the war years by soldiers stationed here including shellfire that destroyed several homes within town limits there are no reported injuries or fatalities attributable to combat activity in Southgate since 1942-43 though municipality officials have noted intermittent vandalism near military property dating back nearly 50 years
