South Gate, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 41,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The first humans to live in South Gate were the Gabrielino people who inhabited what is now the ZIP code 91712. They migrated from central California about 12,000 years ago and built their homes along Mission Creek. In 1825, Mexican soldiers arrived in what is now South Gate after being ordered by General José Joaquín de Alvarado to march through this area and capture any Americans they could find. As part of General Alvarado's campaign against American independence, Mexican soldiers burned down many missions and villages until only South Gate remained standing. In 1868, two brothers named Charles Waddell founded Waddell & Company Land Merchants which became one of the largest land firms in Southern California. The firm developed irrigated agriculture around present-day Rancho Cucamonga and operated a depot on State Route 66 (now US 101) nearpresent-day Redlands before moving its operations to Angeles National Forest when it acquired title to that forest from McKnight & Forde in 1908. Between 1911 and 1912, Harry Chandler constructed an electrician's shop and substation at 6555 Eureka Road which became known as "Chandler's Station." In 1915 during World War I Chandler served as captain of Battery Pigeon #10A at Camp Kearny on Pershing Drive near present-day Koreatown in Los Angeles County before returning home for good. The store closed down but reopened as Chandler's Hardware & Electrical Store circa 1979 with a counter frontage facing Eureka Road (now southbound SR BF 4). In 1924 Harry Chandler married Nancie Soteriades who came from Greece via Ellis Island; they eventually moved to Illinois where he worked as an engineer for DuPont while she worked as a secretary for Sears Roebuck & Co.. After her death he remarried but this marriage also failed soon after birth of their second child; they divorced again later that year. After World War II Chandler retired from engineering work but continued to operate his hardware store until his death in 1978 at the age of 80 years old due to natural causes unrelated to health problems caused by overuse of drugs he had been taking for years prior..
