In 1894, two German immigrants founded a small business selling coffee and other goods from their home in an old mill. They named their business South Gate Coffee Company and soon began serving customers all over Southern California. The company flourished until World War II when production was halted due to the war. However, thanks to the efforts of later owners, Southgate Coffee continued to be operational until the early 1990s. During that time, it helped shape coffee industry norms and standards in California. Today, its legacy can be seen in everything from cafes and restaurants to cup-of-coffee shops all over town.

The first coffeehouses in South Gate, California opened in 1868. These early cafes served coffee that was roasted by the local farmers. The first coffeehouse in South Gate was named The Gourmet Coffee House and it operated out of a small shop on Third Street. In 1871, The Gourmet Coffee House moved to its present location on Market Street and continued serving quality coffee until 1949.
South Gate, California is a city in southern California. The population was 24,865 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Stanislaus County. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is located about 20 miles (30 km) south of San Francisco. South Gate has a traditional "town square" atmosphere with an open-air market on Tuesdays and Thursdays and an annual fair on Saturday that features local artisans and vendors. The main shopping streets are High Street and Grove Street. In 1885, three men named John Sutter, George Steiner, and Edward Beardsley purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of land near South Gate from Juan Bautista de Anza for $10 per acre ($2,700). They named their new town Southgate after one of Anza's Mexican missions. At first there were no buildings or people in Southgate; all that was inhabited were some animals. However, within a few years more than 100 people had moved to Southgate from various parts of Northern California to take advantage of the new gold discoveries around them. The town quickly grew into a busy commercial center with stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Co., Wm Fenton's grocery store (later known as Safeway), Jardine Matheson's shipyard (later renamed East Bay Marine Systems), Humboldt Oil Company wells, Masonic Temple No. 1 and 2 at 4th Avenue and Main Street east of Market Square (now part of the University of Southern California), Masonic Lodge #4 at 8th Avenue north of Market Square (now also part of USC), two churches - First United Methodist Church southeast corner High Street between Second Avenue and Third Streets west side between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Streets east corner First Street northwest corner Market Square north side First Avenue between Seventh Streets south side First avenue east side Seventh Streets

South Gate (formerly known as Westgate) is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Kern County and east of Bakersfield. The first settlers in South Gate were farmers who arrived around 1847. By 1860, there were 10 families living in South Gate. The community name originated with an incident where three men from Yreka walked into town to buy bread and saw that all the stores had closed up for lunch because there was no one left to sell them food. They named the town South Gates because that is where they found it. In 1872, George Atherton opened a mercantile business in South Gate which became very successful thanks to its good prices and wide variety of products. In 1875, Atherton sold his business to Wm Hite and moved back to Oregon where he died two years later. However, Hite's heirs continued operations until their bankruptcy in 1893 which led to the moving of many businesses including Atherton's store across the street from what is now City Hall into what is now South Gate High School; this action helped spur development along Main Street between Utopia Drive and Red Road which began during World War II when demand for housing increased after bombing raids by Japan made it necessary for people near major cities to have escape routes if they were caught inside buildings or if they needed food or shelter. During World War II there was also a large military installation called "Mendocino" located adjacent to what is now Interstate 5 about east of downtown South Gate; this area served as an air-base for fighter planes during both world wars as well as providing storage areas for munitions and other equipment used by both sides during the war. In 1957, local high school students got together to start a student government program at their school which eventually led to the construction of city hall across from City Hall in 1965 which became home of Southgate city council chambers until 2007 when they relocated back into City Hall due courthouse renovations starting in late 2006 required all council meetings be held outside due court proceedings being held inside at then-City Hall Annexes courtroom while portions of downtown mainstreet Were closed off so that repairs could be done on Courthouse Annexe building while also making way for parking garage underneath courthouse structure (which would become part of University Avenue). Ida Mae McCoy High School was established in 1961 withinthe boundaries of present day Eastgate Mall just north of I-5 exit 228A/US 101 southbound & westbound), serving grades 9th-12th according Shadow Valley Elementary schools automated enrollment records indicate that Ida Mae McCoy HS reached its full enrollment capacity on September 15th 1964—just shyof 7 years after opening!
South Gate was founded by the Mexican government in 1836 as part of the Alta California Province. In 1850, it was annexed by the United States and became part of Los Angeles County. The first post office at South Gate opened in 1851. In 1907, South Gate was renamed to honor General James Longstreet, who had been an important figure in the American Civil War. During World War II, South Gate served as a major air base for the United States military. South Gate is now a city in Southern California.
