Hargrave also developed a trading post at nearby Coyote Creek Ranch which he used as his farmstead until his death in 1885. The first gun owner to live in South Gate was James Callahan who bought a shotgun from John Daly at Coyote Creek Ranch in 1878. Callahan operated a Shotgun Shop next door to his farmstead from around this time until 1896 when he sold it to Fenton Giannini Sr., whose son Fenton Giannini Jr., ran it for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1984. In 1907, Orville Aiken opened his Aiken & McClure Rifle Emporium on Main Street across from Post Office Square (now part of Ulysses S Grant Elementary school). This store saw some significant changes during its heyday: In 1911, Aiken added a second floor; an automatic rifle called the “Winchester Model 1903” became available for purchase; and rifles such as Colt Revolvers began becoming available for purchase with ammunition instead of just lead bullets like earlier versions had done. 2nd Amendment citizens such as Aiken drew comfort knowing they could buy arms without fear of government confiscation or other negative consequences should their purchases beunsatisfied or if they should choose not to use them domestically (see “Gun Control Laws During The 20th Century” sidebar). The motto of the city was "Equality and Fraternity". In 1915 US forces burned down part of an old adobe ranch house known as Adobe Rancho because its owner refused to sign a peace agreement promising not to fight against American troops during World War I. This event is considered one of history's most notorious acts of censorship by the United States government

South Gate is a small town located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1851 by James Fenton and was named for the southern gate of Mount Hope Cemetery, which it adjacent to. South Gate became an incorporated town on February 14, 1922. The population of South Gate was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The community began as a small farming village on the edge of Mount Hope Cemetery, about five miles from downtown Los Angeles. When the cemeteries were closed in 1881 and 1882 due to over-use, settlers nearby turned to agriculture because they could not get access to land or funds to maintain them. In 1892 Community activist Edwin Leland purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of Southgate off Rancho Santa Fe Road and developed it into what is now known as Southgate Village. In 1924 the first high school opened in SouthGate when West Side High School moved from Lynwood; today’s Eisenhower Middle School serves students from both villages. In 1950 when Interstate 10 was built through central Los Angeles County, south of Southgate Rd., residents appealed for its routing through their town so that their businesses would not be destroyed; this prevailed and I-10 passed just outside town limits on December 12th 1951 without damage to any property except for one house where a lightbulb broke during construction. According to local legend, during prohibition days (1912-1916), several men took bribes from Mexican smugglers in order to buy liquor supplies from United States authorities at Fort MacArthur Boulevard and then drive it into town via Olvera Street where they sold it illegally at cutrate prices before driving back out again across I-5 near North Hollywood; hence “the drive” alcohol smuggling operations occurred here until Proposition 65 made such activities illegal in 2000). South Gate has been mentioned frequently throughout history as one of many towns hit hard by prohibition – see also: "Hollywood" article below! In 1881, the California Gold Rush began and led to an increase in population on South Gate Peninsula. The town rapidly sprang up with people coming to find their fortune in the new goldfields. In 1886, South Gate was incorporated as a city. South Gate experienced significant American military activity during World War II. On November 8, 1942, Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and killed more than 2,000 Americans including many of South Gate's citizens. The attack remains one of the darkest days in town's history.
