South Gate is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 31,824 as of the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Bernardino Mountains and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. South Gate was founded in 1887 by Mormon missionaries from Utah. The city's first post office opened in 1886. In 1902, it became the location for what would become Southern California's largest cotton-based agricultural industry with plantations such as John Sutter and David Montgomery running large acreage throughout the area. The local economy changed completely when World War II started and production stopped due to shortages of resources. Since South Gate's heyday as an agricultural center, its population has decreased significantly; however, it remains a bedroom community with significant employment opportunities within commuting distance for most workers. South Gate is located in San Bernardino County, California, about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The city was founded in 1887 by brothers George and Thomas Southgate as a small community on the eastern edge of what is now known as the City of Angels. The name "South Gate" derived from the location of their original homestead which sat on a south-facing bluff overlooking the city. The first post office in South Gate opened on November 3, 1887. At its height, South Gate had a population of only 10 people. However, over time, it grew larger due to its strategic location and easy access to Indian Wells Road and other transportation arteries. In 1916, South Gate was incorporated as a city with a population of 507 residents. During World War II, South Gate played an important role in the war effort by providing munitions production plants for the USAAF (the United States Air Force). The plant operated until 1951 when it was closed down due to economic constraints brought about by postwar inflation. Today, SouthGate remains an important agricultural center with a focus on fruits and vegetables; however, its commercial infrastructure has been diminished since the closure of the munitions plant years ago. There are still some remnants of that era though - including several renovated buildings used for government offices such as City Hall and county courthouse - which serve as reminders that even today there are many reasons to visit this vibrant community located just outside Los Angeles’s limits

The town's first post office was built in 1852 and its first store opened in 1855. In 1861, South Gate became the capital of California and it remained so until 1959. During the early days of South Gate, there were few schools or other public amenities and residents relied largely on their own resources to survive. However, over time the town developed an infrastructure that made it one of the most thriving communities in California.
