The town was founded by Mexicans in 1853 as part of Rancho San Miguel de Agua Caliente. It became an American settlement in 1859 when it was given to John C. Fremont as part of the Rancho Los Nietos grant. South Gate began to grow rapidly after becoming a railway junction for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1865 and being selected as site for the new city of Bakersfield in 1872. The first settlers were Germans who arrived from Germany in 1874 and Irish who came in 1875. The 1926 fire destroyed most of the town but Phase I redevelopment began soon after with many new homes and businesses being built on what had been lost including a movie theater, post office, grocery store and several churches. By 1970, much of Phase II development had been completed with over 100 residences, 25 businesses and 10 schools within South Gate’s boundaries alone. In 1974 Southgate voters approved Measure I which created a downtown district that has since grown into one of north Kern County’s most vibrant communities with numerous cultural events each year attracting thousands of people from throughout southern California during its annual Faire season (October-May). Phase III redevelopment continued through the 1990s with many new homes being built on land that had once been used for agricultural purposes such as an oil refinery and ammunition production plants before finally becoming home to more than 200 residents by 2000 according to city planners; making it one of Kern County’s fastest growing cities ever despite significant infrastructure challenges resulting from decades-long drought conditions that have devastated much rural Kern County。Today Southgate remains a vibrant community full of activity both inside its borders and beyond; hosting popular art galleries, restaurants, nightclubs and other nightlife options while also providing opportunities for local public services such as libraries, parks and transportation systems

South Gate, California is a small city located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. The city was founded by Juan Manuel Altamirano and his wife Luz Maria de la Garza on January 25, 1854. The Altamirano family was from Pueblo de las Haciendas in New Mexico and came to California in 1839. They built the first cotton gin west of the Rocky Mountains in what is now South Gate. The first Post Office at South Gate was established on November 17, 1857. On May 14, 1865, South Gate became a town under the jurisdiction of San Bernardino County. In 1886, Southgate became an incorporated municipality with a population of 910 people. In 1912, it merged with neighboring Arroyo Grande to form Southgate-Arroyo Grande City. The business district that now includes downtown South Gate was developed between 1907 and 1915 when the railroad bypassed the town and new industrial areas were built near Veteran's Memorial Park and Riverside Boulevard east of downtown. The commercial area grew rapidly during World War II as war production increased in nearby Riverside and Orange counties; many manufacturing plants were located here including Lockheed Aircraft Company (now Lockheed Martin), Raytheon Missile Company (later Raytheon Co.), Kaiser Aluminum Corporation (later Western Electric), Buick Motor Corp., Ford Motors Co., General Electric Appliances Inc., Sears Roebuck & Company, Pacific Gas & Electric Company (now PG&E) and other major companies.During World War II there also emerged a significant military establishment with American Forces El Dorado Barracks being erected just north of downtown south of Riverside Boulevard between Seventh Street and Eighth Street; it served as headquarters for Army Air Forces troops stationed throughout southern California until 1945 when it was replaced by Fort MacArthur north of Los Angeles Harbor). After World War II most industries declined but some remain such as Ford Motor Co.'s Carpenters' Shop which closed in 1984 after more than fifty years operation. In recent years much redevelopment has taken place around DowntownSouthGate including: revitalization efforts for Veterans Memorial Park began in 2006 as part of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's "City Beautiful" initiative; plans are underway for development along Interstate 10 adjacent to Veteran's Memorial Park involving hotel/office space, retail acres currently vacant or used for parking lots behind ramps leading into I-10;hatfield Developments LLC has submitted permits to construct over 100 residential units called "The Ring" opposite Veterans Memorial Park aimed at attracting young professionals who commute into LAX Airport;and large projects are planned for State Route 46 immediately adjacent to Interstate 10 EB where two new shopping malls will be constructed - one focused largely on luxury stores while another focused more broadly on attractive mix uses encompassing office towers/condominiums/retail spaces
