South Gate, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,617 at the 2000 census and 38,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The City of South Gate was founded on November 12, 1870 by Eclectic Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived from Oregon. Reverend W.H. Dunham set up his headquarters on what is now south gate avenue and named it for his hometown of Gatesville in Kentucky which he had visited while missionary work there in 1868-69. On December 1st 1870 SouthGate became an incorporated town with Aldermen (elected officials) elected by popular vote instead of appointed officials as was the custom then in Southern California towns and villages...A fire destroyed much of downtown on January 3rd 1871 but induced new investment that rebuilt most of the town including a fine brick courthouse and jail which still stands today... In 1881 when Riverside County was created out of parts of San Bernardino County, Southgate became one of its first municipalities... By 1915 it had become one of the largest cities within Riverside County boundaries... In 1925 Southgate annexed part of neighbouring Moreno Valley making it to its current total size... On July 15th 1950 SouthGate enacted its first zoning ordinance creating limits to development east or westof State Route 91 near State Route 14 which has prevented further suburbanization within city boundaries
Since the early days of marine Corps, there has been a strong tradition of sending Marines and their families Presents. This tradition can be traced back to 1812 when Commandant James K. Polk ordered Marines to send small presents to their families during Christmas season. The tradition continued with the Marine Corps Gazette in 1915 which distributed a special issue called “Presents from the Marines” which featured photos of Marines and their families giving gifts. In 1939, Colonel John W. DeWitt issued an order stating that all enlisted marines must present one gift at each muster as part of the introduction process. From then on, this practice was formalized and became known as “Gift-giving Season” within the Marine Corps. The custom of presenting Marines with gifts gradually spread through other branches of service before becoming common among civilians as well. Today, marines continue to establish a strong relationship with their family and friends by gifting them unique items such as cruise tickets or sporting equipment. South Gate, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It began as an agricultural community developed along the banks of the San Gabriel River in what is now Southgate Township. The first post office in South Gate opened on December 15, 1879. The name of the town derived from its location on a U-shaped bend in the river that facilitated shipping and trade between East Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay. The town grew rapidly after World War II when soldier and veteran families moved into the area because of new opportunities created by Aircraft Manufacturing plants being built there. After many years of growth, Southgate experienced a decline during the late 1990s due to economic recession and development elsewhere in the county. However, since 2000 Southgate has seen renewed growth with new businesses coming online and increasedemployment opportunities for local people. In recent years, South Gate has been selected as one of "It" towns for its growing commercial district which includes several high-tech companies as well as several other professional services firms such as chemistry and MBA programs. South Gate's rich history begins with its founding by pioneers who arrived during the early 1800s following gold discoveries near modern day Yuma City Arizona Territory (present day southern Mexico). They were looking for land where they could raise crops and build homes so they could provide goods that would be sold back home to support their families back then living off subsistence agriculture methods only using what they could glean from nature around them; some potatoes were hand-picked fresh from vines while others came from dried beans ground until smooth so that it could be used like flour which was then baked into cookies or cakes etc.). In 1879, two men named William Ainslie and George Goodwin founded a Post Office at what became known as “South gate” - about 3 miles east of present day Southport Village on State Route 159 North (the route old US 159 takes today). At this time there were no railroads reaching southcentral California so mail had to be transported overland via pack horse or Native American trails running through country now part of southeast Riverside County before it reached Dublin Road northwest of downtown Los Angeles – crossing three mountain ranges enroute! A year later another Post Office opened at what is now Our Lady Of Angels Catholic Church located just north east of present day Northglenn Avenue within easy walking distance (and original home base)of both shops/cafes mentioned above 😊 So these two post offices did more than just serve rural settlers with relayed news & gossip; they also served those who traveled through these parts on their way to & from LAS VEGAS – Acton (east), Ontario (west), Saugus (northwest),Ontario Hills Rancho Seco(southwest)…. all without ever leaving their comfortable little communities behind! By 1886 there must have been over 50 residents living in “South gate” based upon surveys taken!! Although very few buildings still stand today evidence suggests that this once thriving agricultural community quickly lost most if not all its occupants during prohibition era days when booze was king (& women couldn’t get jobs doing anything else!)…..alcoholic beverages being mainstay hereabouts until current days?…or maybe it was just our thirsty eyes that missed out 🙂??? anyways…..by 1930 less than 5% populate remaining census tract….that doesn’t include any Residence Halls nor Schools located within township limits!!! Today even fewer people call “South gate” home😭 Although we may never see another boom period like those experienced during past decades; nonetheless our community will continue to thrive thanks largely to everyone who has contributed over the years👍
