The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish explorers who discovered it during their expedition of 1769-70. A mission was established in 1821 by Father José Altuve, with 21 priests serving for eight years until it burned down in 1824. The Mexican land grant Rancho Niguel was awarded to José Baca in 1838 and he built the first rancho here. In 1850, American pioneers, seeking new lands west of Los Angeles City Limits arrived here and began attending services at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church which had been erected on what is now south gate street. This priest became known as “TheFather” because his sermonizing appealed to Americans looking for religious satisfaction outside their homespun Christianity that they could find something better than seasonal farming around Mission Viejo Creek where they lived year round! South Gate's population continued to grow rapidly during World War II; however, due to wartime austerity measures instituted by Los Angeles County officials, few jobs were available in the town outside of agriculture or manufacturing activities related to munitions production. As a result of this situation, many people left Southgate for better-paying jobs in other parts of California during and after World War II (although some still remain). Southgate experienced another period of growth following Proposition 13 (the state constitutional amendment that banned gay marriage) when wealthy Californians decided to move into the area in order to escape Prop 13's implications on their social lives and lifestyles. However, although this time around there was significant housing development taking place within reach of most south gate residents (and beyond), little progress has been made towards ending poverty or reversing gentrification trends within south gate since then
