South Gate, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was only 2,571 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Gate is one of two towns in the city of Riverside and is also home to both Stonington High School and Crestline Middle School. The first settlers in what would become South Gate were French Canadians who arrived in 1847. They built a log cabin on the edge of present-day south gate Creek. At that time, it was an agricultural area with grapes being grown for wine production and local cheese made from cow's milk. The original post office was established in 1857, but it moved to its current location about a mile west of downtown in 1865 when the railroad came through town. In 1901, citrus fruit farmers founded the Citrus Heights cooperative farm which still operates today as one of Southern California's largest citrus farms producing more than 1 million pounds (454 metric tons) of fruit each year. In 1945, when Veterans Administration Hospital opened nearby, South Gate became home to many military veterans who were either discharged or transferred there during World War II.
