South Gate is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 21,813 as of 2010. It is part of the Pomona-Arroyo Hills Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Gate is named after an Indian mission called South Gate which was built on land that now includes portions of the city of Pomona and the towns of Claremont, Glendora and Lancaster. In 1851, following Mexican victory at Buena Vista Creek, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living east of San Bernardino be removed to designated reservations within five miles (8 km) of Interstate 5. This order led to many ranchers moving their herds from eastern areas into what would become Southgate. In 1886, Mr. Fenton donated 8 acres (3 ha) to the Town for $1,000 with a gift tax exemption for 20 years. The first house was built on this parcel in 1888 by his son Harry Fenton who also served as town clerk until 1893 when he resigned because he wanted to move closer to his family in Pasadena. A schoolhouse followed in 1889 and a Post Office was opened in 1890 by Wm Hargrave with mail delivered daily from Pasadena through Arroyo Park northwest to South Gate The growth around South Gate forced Mr. Fenton to sell his land near present day Spring Street and Elm Street in 1904 but he did manage to develop some streets near where he once lived including First Avenue and Spring Street which still bear his name today A new hospital was opened in 1958 by Drs John Crouse and Edwin Jablonski with ambulances providing service until 1966 when they became based at Hollywood Regional Medical Center which remains open today as Southern California Health Services District #2

In 1909, South Gate became an incorporated town with a population of about 350 people. Some notable residents of South Gates include author Lillian Hellman and actor-director Orson Welles. Welles lived adjacent to South Gate for many years before moving to Hollywood in 1935 to become an assistant director on Citizen Kane (1941), but he left Town Hall shortly after its completion so as not to disturb development along City Limits Road which then ran through town center between Spring Street and Western Avenue; well-known architect Edward Hopper also lived nearby during these times In 2002, the old high school building located at 9600 Sherman Way burned down; however no one was injured as a result SouthGate has been home to various businesses over the years such as The Ford dealership until they closed down in 2006 due to lack of customers In 2017 Walmart announced that they will close their Southern California locations effective September 15th due to low sales rates across all stores including in North America It's unclear how or if this will effect local businesses within walking distance from both Walmart & Sam's Club locations
The City of South Gate was established in 1887 by the merger of two small villages, town and village. The original settlement was located on the east side of San Bernardino River.
