South Gate, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population was 54,651 as of the 2010 census. It is adjacent to La Jolla and has a Mediterranean climate. The first Europeans to visit South Gate were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on November 29, 1769. They traveled from San Diego down the Pacific coast and stopped at what is now called Point Loma. A site for an official mission was chosen by Captain José Narváez on December 12, 1770 and Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra arrived on February 3, 1771. The town of Los Angeles was founded near mission Santa Cruz in 1847 by Spanish missionaries In 1853-54 Mexican land grantees started arrive in search of new land to settle after they were forced out of their original statelets by American settlers. One group led by Fernando Wood set up camp at Point Conventions on January 25th 1850 and named their settlement "SouthGate". On February 1st 1850 the US Government accepted Mexico's offer for Rancho San Pedro y La Mesa which became part of Juarez County in Chihuahua Territory when that territory was created from parts of Alta California under Mexican rule following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. A post office called South Gate opened in 1865; it changed its name to La Jolla on October 15th 1870 due to concerns abouthat local residents might use the name “La Jolla” as their home address rather than attend school or work because they considered it more prestigious than “SouthGate”. In 1917 Southern Californian Gold Rush veteran Richard Wolkowitz settled at 12351 Agua Dulce Road (now Hillcrest Drive) within walking distance of Southgate where he operated a small general store until his death in 1959 The area around Southgate experienced heavy development during World War II with several large Army Air Forces airfields being built there including Imperial Beach Army Airfield (later Barksdale AFB), North Island Airfield #2 (later Tyndall AFB), and Vandenberg AFB In 1951 South gate voters approved Measure No 2 which provided for annexation into City Of La Jolla Incorporation effective June 1st 1952 On October 15th 1970 City Council voted 7-1 to change its name from La Jolla Incorporation To TheCity Of South Gate Incorporation effective October 15th 1970

South Gate is located in San Bernardino County, California. The town was established in 1877 by mining and agricultural pioneers who founded the South Gate Mines and Mill at what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 66 and State Route 54. The town rapidly grew, becoming a major center for trade, industry, and transportation during the late 19th century. In 1916, South Gate became a city when it was incorporated as part of Riverside. Since then, Southgate has grown to become one of the most vibrant communities in southern California. The history of South gate began with early miners who prospected for gold near present-day south gate creek. By 1877, these men had discovered enough gold to warrant an investment in a new mine called the "South Gates." This mine operated from 1877 until 1888 when it was closed due to low production rates. However, another group led by John Pritchard reopened the mine in 1890 under a different name - the "Bravo Mine." After some successful years at this site, Bravo Mine failed again in 1896 due to low production rates once again forcing investors out of business within months of each other! However, entrepreneur John Haughey had already experienced success with his previous venture - a flour mill he built onsite at what is now corner of SR 66 and US Highway 395 (now known as SB 1). With renewed interest sparked by news stories about discoveries being made dotting nearby Kern County prospects (eastern Riversideshire), Haughey decided to open up his flour mill into a larger operation -the "Haughey Flour Mill". Unfortunately for him however, due to high competition from mills in Los Angeles County (then still part of Southern California), he could not keep up with LA's ratepayers' demand for flour! In 1902 Haughey reopened his flour mill under new management - this time headed by Capt Fenton Cates Jr., son of Captain Fenton Cates Sr., owner/operator of two earlier mills on adjoining properties within Riverside County known as No Name Hill & Valley Mills Ltd.. At this point things got really interesting for Haughey! His Oppenheimer brothers operating their own large flour mills throughout Southern California finally seemed like they might be able to keep up with HISM's profits! But fate intervened yet again...in 1906 Capt Fenton Cates Jr.'s father passed away suddenly leaving him sole proprietor/operatorof No Name Hill & Valley Mills Ltd.. For nearly thirty years he ran everything from day-to-day operations until his death in 1941 suddenly placing an end once and for all any hopes that HISM would continue running its mills forever!!! It wasn't until after World War II that HISM resurrected its original name - "South Gate Flour Mill" which continued operations through 1983 (!). Nowadays Southgate is one of Southern California's favorite tourist destinations thanks largely to its rich local history combined with its great shopping opportunities available both locally AND statewide!!
The first European to set foot on what is now South Gate was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who explored the San Francisco Bay area in 1542. The first rancho on what is now South Gate was granted to José Antonio de Haro by Mexican Governor Alvarado in 1776. On December 25, 1853, California's statehood was ratified and San Francisco became the capital of California. In 1859, a post office was founded at South Gate and remained in operation until 1907.
