South Gate, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to Walnut Creek. South Gate became known as the "Gate to the Grapes" for its many wineries. The first recorded mention of South Gate was by Mission Father Junípero Serra in 1776 when he noted that it was "just south of San Pablo" on his journey from Monterey Peninsula to Santa Clara Valley. In 1821, Colonel John C. Fremont arrived in South Gate and named it after himself, General James K. Polk's headquarters during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On July 10, 1886, Mayor Lorenzo Thomas founded City Hall which still stands today within Southgate Village limits. In 1887, Judge Alfred Payson Ramsey built a summer home near what is now Main Street and Happy Valley Road in what became known as Park Avenue Park District #2. Today's Ramsey House still stands within this district - one of only three original structures remaining from this period in Southgate Village history! In 1975, with development proposed for much of downtown Contra Costa County including much of what is now South Gates Village and neighboring Walnut Creek,[1], Mayor Tom Bates wrote an ordinance establishing a zoning plan for all new developments within city limits which limited growth to single family homes or businesses with 25residential units or less per dwelling unit[2]. This ordinance remains effective today as more than half of all new development within city boundaries since 1975 has been residential! A fire destroyed most of City Hall on December 6th 1941; however portions such as the council chambers remain standing today - providing evidence that even during wartime local government can be functioning effectively! The post office closed its doors in 1952 but reopened twice before finally being retired in 1993 due mainly to mail volume generated bysouth gate residents themselves!! South Gate is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1887 by James J. Southgate and his wife, Anna Haggerty Southgate. The first post office was established at the corner of Valencia and Elm Streets on February 12, 1888. The name of the town was changed to South Gate in 1907 after it became an incorporated village. In 1912, the General Electric Company leased land east of the tracks for a power plant and production began that year. The plant produced electricity until it was decommissioned in 1984. The economy of South Gate has been based on agriculture since its founding and mining has also been an important part of its history. Mining operations began around 1859 when gold was discovered at Fillmore Hill near present-day North Park Center. Gold Nuggets were brought into town from Fillmore via wagon train and then delivered to local smelters where they were ground into coins or dusts before being sold to buyers in town or nearby cities like Claremont or Redlands for money or goods such as farm animals or lumber. Gold production stopped around 1870 because of high costs associated with extracting the metal from hard rock rather than easy-to-work MINERAL WELLS (www). However, some smaller gold discoveries continued throughout the 1870s including one near present day West Covina which produced some 2 ounces (51 milliliters) per tonne of gold! Some $5 million worth of coins were mined from this mine between1870 and 1880 but most all proved to be worthless due to difficult foundry workability combined with low grades demanded by banks looking for ultra pure specimens which at that time could only be extracted in very limited quantities from deposits located outside of California!

It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1847 as "Las Ventanas" and named for the two gateways of the Santa Catalina mountain range that divided Rancho San Antonio de Bexar from Mexican land grants given to María Antonia Vallejo. The first post office at South Gate opened on December 12, 1848.
