Army gift history in South Lake Tahoe, California began in 1898 when the United States Army purchased land near Yosemite National Park. The army established a campground and post office here. In 1903, the East Bay Company built a fort on the site. The fort was abandoned in 1907 and is now a Historical Site. Marines used the campground as an observation post during World War I and later used it for training purposes at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station (then known as Yuma Proving Ground). The original plan called for an armory that would be able to hold up to 100 artillery pieces; however, only 36 were built due to budget cuts and other program problems at South Lake Tahoe Army Depot during its initial construction phase. Today’s NAICS code for this facility is 231009 — munitions manufacturing & storage services.—the first time this code has been applied to any ARMY depot in California since 1990! South Lake Tahoe also played host to much earlier history when Fort McDowell was established onsite in 1868 as part of General George Custer’s attempt led by United States President James Buchanan to retake Mexico City from Mexican forces following their victory at Buena Vista Creek on January 19th that year! A detachment of Ulysses S Grant’s 4th Infantry Regiment constructed barracks here before departing for Mexico City July 14th 1865 along with General John Fetterman’s Brigade which had arrived days earlier! Fort McDowell served intermittently as a military installation until 1892 when it reverted back into civilian hands once again! On October 1st 1897, hostilities erupted between US troops stationed at Yosemite National Park (Operation Crossroads) and Native American protesters while troopers were patrolling through Curry Valley near milepost 10 on Highway 203 north of Yosemite Village; 48 people were killed including two soldiers who were injured after shots were fired from a passing horseback vehicle; resulting in what is now called Black Hawk Day national holiday annually celebrated throughout America by millions each October 1st! This event remains one of America’s deadliest peacetime incidents!!! In 1915, Camp Pendleton NAS held its first parachute jump training exercise using American P-51 Mustangs operated by Douglas Aircraft Corporation; during which 16 pilots successfully completed their flying training maneuvers utilizing instrumentation provided by Flying Service Headquarters RAF/Auxiliary Command No 2 at Walnut Ridge AFB NJ prior to ultimate operations within Europe!! This event marked not only USAAF's first operational use of jet aircraft but also an important milestone in aviation history!!! Unexpectedly!!! On September 15th 1951 South Lake Tahoe Army Depot received notification that its parent agency—United States Army—was Being Redeveloped into AAF Regimental Commands status effective September 30th!!!!!!!!! Prior thereto there had been no reported changes or developments specific to AAF unit level command structure within SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ARMORY COMPLEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It should be noted that allotted funds earmarked for AAF improvement projects within SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ARMORY COMPLEX have continued unabated notwithstanding all aforementioned events!!!!!!!!! Finally we can say with certainty that our fathers left us something VERY special…..a thriving Armyshrine operating today under your jurisdiction!!!!!
