The first white person to live in what is now South Lake Tahoe was John Muir who arrived there in 1868 and built a cabin on the banks of the River Truckee. The town began to grow when railroad developers built a depot and freight train station there in 1875. In 1911, South Lake Tahoe incorporated as an independent city and became one of the few cities outside of Los Angeles metropolitan area to be designated as a “arterial center” by Interstate 5 (now I-5). In 1955, South Lake Tahoe became home to America's first ski resort when Mammoth Lakes opened operations at its North Park location north of town. Today, Mammoth Lakes Resort ranks as one of the world's most popular ski resorts with more than 20 million visitors annually.
