Kennedy an American built torpedo boat, The USS Constitution! Two years later, President McKinley presented Rear Admiral George Dewey with a beautiful steel sailing vessel called The USS Enterprise! A number of other notable marine gifts have been given over the years including: -A motorboat for Emperor Hirohito in 1935 -A submarine for King George VI and his wife Elizabeth at their coronation in 1936 -A helicopter for Ulysses S. South Lake Tahoe was founded on February 14, 1959 by a group of entrepreneurs including James Laughlin and Donahue Blanco. The name "Tahoe" comes from the Spanish word for "lake." The first store in South Lake Tahoe opened its doors on December 4, 1959. Today, South Lake Tahoe is home to more than 350 businesses and individuals who call it their home. The history of South Lake Tahoe can be traced back to the early 1800s when Mono County was created from portions of Nevada and Arizona. In 1859, James Laughlin and Donahue Blanco purchased 640 acres of land near present-day Highway 39 north of South Bend. The two men started a small farming operation which helped contribute to the growth of the community over time. In 1969, construction began on the North—South ski resort which would become one of America's most popular ski resorts. Today, North—South Ski Resort continues to be one of the town's most popular attractions with over 2 million visitors annually! One important aspect that has made South Lake Tahoe an important part of California culture is its rich history dating back to before there were any towns within what is now Mono County! On February 14th 1959, a group of entrepreneurs led by James Laughlin decided to establish a new town in what was then known as Arizona Territory. They named their new settlement after Mount Whitney – home to America’s tallest peak at 8,850 feet (2,814 meters). Over time more people moved into South Lake Tahoe so that it could become an even greater center for commerce and entertainment. This growth helped create some truly unique aspects about this incredible community such as its concentration around four retail districts; Grapeseed Rd., Northwood Ave., Capitol Hill/Foothill Dr., and Westwood Blvd.. These districts contain nearly every type imaginable retailer with anchors like Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy’s Incorporated, JCPenney Incorporated etcetera…………….. all while still being close enough together so you can enjoy shopping without havingto leave your comfortable homes!
The area now known as South Lake Tahoe was first explored by the Spanish in 1777. The area was also explored by Lieutenant John C. Fremont in 1851 and Captain Edward H. Brooke in 1857. The first white settlers arrived in the area during the 1860s, when California became a state. In 1865, General James K. Polk ordered General Arthur A. Beale to survey the entire Sierra Nevada for potential military purposes. Beale's survey resulted in the creation of 4 ranger districts and 1 civil engineer district which were responsible for surveying, mapping, and constructing trails throughout the region. In 1870, gold was discovered on Virgin Peak near South Pass along what is now Highway 95. This caused an influx of people into the region, starting with profiteers from mining operations and soon followed by farmers looking to establish settlements around Gold Rush sites like Yosemite National Park and south of Lake Tahoe. By 1872, there were over 150 small towns dotting what is today South Lake Tahoe County and many more developing since then including North Star Valley (now Half Dome Village), Truckee Meadows (now Crystal Springs Resort), Inverness (later known as Alpine Meadows), Whitefish Bay (later known as Northstar Ranch), South Pass Village (), Happy Isles (), Redwood Shores (), Bishop ()and other villages (). South Africa annexed British Columbia in 1898 following World War I which led to increased traffic on U S - Canada border crossings due to smuggling efforts undertaken by Canadian criminals operating out of their colonies.. After several incidents where Canadian troops were killed or critically injured trying to stop these smugglers, President Franklin D Roosevelt called for a plan to build a fence along both sides of Canada's International Boundary River between Alberta and Manitoba so that such smuggling activities could be stopped at source without harming innocent civilians living within that boundary line.. The result of this effort was the construction of 3 miles (5 km) long international boundary fence along both banks of the river which has helped keep Canadian immigration illegal ever since
