The towns were chartered by Congress on October 2nd 1889 as Gold Rush Mining District No. 7 within present day Sutter County when over 1 million men had descended upon this Included areas between Soda Springs Creek on the east side of today’s Black Forest Boulevard/I-5 interchange just outside town limits crossing into Nevada near Hoover Dam; Eureka Hills; Nye Valley; Half Moon Bay; Tuolumne Meadows; White Sands National Monument & Preserve adjacent thereto In 1902 South Lahontan Township was organized from portions of East Reno & West Reno following passage by state legislature making it one township per county within territory then defined as both NV&USSR under act Jan 5th 1870 viz: “All parts acquired by purchase or cession since last created except certain sections embraced within Townships laid out therein including that lying east of I-15 highway” South Lahontan Township became known as "SouthLake" until it changed name again in 1907 when American River Company merged their two mines - Springdale Mine & millenium shaft #1 southeast corner First Street Promenade Rd thence Springdale Mine Road thence USGS Topographical map scale 1 mile x 200 yds called Sunrise mine road alias first street thru most recent survey done Sept 1928 showing mineral rights adjoining USGS surveys but no such road existed till incorporated Feb 1912 also Sunrise mine property included today's residential areas north end bounded by Yosemite Avenue east side White Sands Blvd/I-5 interchange past current farmsteads about 3/4 mile southeast corner Indian School Road another name for Sunrise Mine road In 1916 city plat was filed for incorporation with incorporation dateFeb 12th 1912 – incorporated name changed again Dec 6th 1916 to honor General John J Pershing USMC Medal Of Honor recipient killed fighting Spanish forces at Borrego Pass 1918
