The Navy deployed a Gift of Lifeboat in South Lake Tahoe, California on October 1st, 1990. The gift was given to the local community by the American Red Cross with the hope that it would encourage help in time of need. The USS Constitution (1797) was decommissioned in 1921 and sold for scrap metal to be turned into boats. In 1938, a group of men from Mojave National Forest began restoring the boat as a tourist attraction known as "The Constitution Museum". After years of restoration, The Constitution Museum's first collection arrived in South Lake Tahoe in 1967 when Don Kapp donated his collection of United States Naval vessels and supplies to Southern Pacific Railroad Company Ltd. In 1990, The Navy gifted another Gift of Lifeboat to South Lake Tahoe Community College after donation by member Fred Phelps.
