The USAF Air Force Academy in South Pasadena, California began awarding airmen gifts in the early 1940s. The first gift was a watch from Lt. Col. Arthur Kesselring, commanding officer of the IX Fighter Command during World War II. In 1948, Capt. A.J. Soden gave a set of golf clubs to Cadet Class 1st Class John Naiman as a token of appreciation for his hard work and dedication on the soccer team at the Academy. In 1951, Maj. Gen., Leslie Ritchie donated an airplane for use by cadets at the Academy as well as other military installations around Southern California. In 1957, Maj.(G) Raymond Jorgensen bestowed a rifle and ammunition belt on Cadet Class 2nd Class Charles Hilliard in memory of his father who had died in Korea while serving with the USMC during World War II. In 1969, Maj.(D) Don Rothschild created an award called "The Jackpot" which recipient was selected byChancellor Driggs Menninger himself! The Jackpot recipients were typically officers or enlisted members ABT (Army Bureau of Technology). From 1970-1972 Lt.(jg) Clyde Kemp donated two P-51 Mustang fighter planes to be used by cadets at Maxwell AFB near Birmingham Alabama; these planes were later used to fly cadets around Los Angeles County during Christmas breaks year round! Since its inception, Air Force Academy has awarded airmen gifts such as cars, homes and more - providing comfort and support to service members worldwide!

The first people to live in what is now South Pasadena were the Ohlone tribe. They hunted and gathered wild plants and fruits that they found along the LA coast.
