The history of the South Pasadena Army National Guard is reflective of the entire United States Army. The unit was organized on November 10, 1916 and activated on December 3rd. The first Sergeant Major of the South Pasadena Army National Guard was Lieutenant Colonel John H. Smith who presided over the organization and activation ceremonies. The first units to arrive in World War I were a detachment from San Bernardino County’s 9th Infantry Battalion which served with distinction at Meuse-Argonne, France in 1918. In 1919, another detachment from San Bernardino County’s 9th Infantry Battalion arrived in Germany as part of American Expeditionary Forces after America entered into World War I. After the war, the South Pasadena Army National Guard continued to serve its community by providing military services during peacetime through both state militia and full time army status until 1978 when it reverted back to state militia service under then Governor George Ryan’s proclamation effective January 1st, 1979. On July 22nd 1938 an additional detachment from San Bernardino County’s 9th Infantry Battalion arrived in England as part of American Expeditionary Force II following World War I which would provide continuity for military service with America’s allies until America entered into World War II once again on September 2nd 1939 (the day after Pearl Harbor). Army gift history in South Pasadena, California began with the United States Military Academy at West Point. The school was founded in 1802 and graduated its first class of cadets in 1825. The Academy became an Army Command and General Staff School in 1920, followed by the Infantry School in 1925. It was renamed the Infantry School of Americas Training Center (ISATC) on 1 July 1969 as part of an expansion of the Army command structure. In April 1992, it changed its name again to the U.S. Army War College after being designated a National Defense University by President George H.W. Bush. On 25 October 2002, it became a graduate school for officers with the rank of colonel or higher when it was announced that USC had been selected as the recipient of a $10 million donation from retired General William Clements Polk Jr.. South Pasadena, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 33,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the West Hollywood/Los Angeles metropolitan area and is known for its prestigious Hillsborough Avenue shopping district. South Pasadena also has a rich history dating back to Rancho Cucamonga, which was founded in 1879 by wealthy landowner Samuel S. Hill and his wife Anna Maria de la Cruz Morelos. The city's namesake comes from José Myriam Agustín de la Rúa y Arreaza y Pico (1865-1941), who served as Mexican ambassador to the United States during World War I and as governor of Coahuila in Mexico before he arrived in Los Angeles in 1914. The first people to live in what is now South Pasadena were Native Americans. They hunted game on the hills surrounding Rancho Cucamonga and built lodges there around 1000 AD. In 1839, rancher John Cranch donated 158 acres (6 km2) of land near present-day Pasadena to become an agricultural reserve known as Rancho La Brea Tar Pits National Monument. After being acquired by real estate developer Julius Rosenwald in 1915, La Brea Tar Pits became one of Rosenwald's initial properties within South Pasadena; it was later sold to subdivide into tracts that were sold off and developed into single-family homes beginning around 1920s through annexation of other nearby neighborhoods such as Boyle Heights and Echo Park. The area now called South Pasadena was annexed by Los Angeles on January 15, 1907 following the passage of City Council Resolution 9985 declaring that all "reservations within this city" be annexed without any vote or discussion from the citizens thereof.— Included among these areas were much of what is now Downtown Los Angeles along with most of Southeast LA including Central Boulevard between First Street and Third Street—the only street remaining unchanged since 1907 when annexation took place

In 1887, San Gabriel Valley was part of Mexico and the United States. On November 15,1887, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed between Mexico and the United States. The treaty ceded most of California to the United States, including South Pasadena. The land that is now South Pasadena was first settled by Anglo-Americans in 1868. Many people from Northern California moved down to Southern California during the Gold Rush because it was a cheap place to live and work. In 1870, there were about 100 people living in what is now South Pasadena. By 1880, there were only six families living inSouth Pasadena proper and many of these had come from San Francisco or nearby cities such as Oakland and Emeryville. The first mayor of South Pasadena was John Atherton who served from 1892 until 1898. He was followed by Wm Fenton who served until 1904. During this time period, much progress was made in developing South Pasadena including the opening of a new shopping center on Fairbank Street called Macy’s department store which opened its doors on March 1st 1902 under Mayor Fenton’s leadership In 1912 Mayor Harry Sargent announced plans for a new city park named Park Boulevard which would include a golf course as well as public housing developments for blacks and Latinos
