The Coast Guard has been a vital part of the community in South Pasadena since it was established in 1917. The Coast Guard Station at South Pasadena is one of the oldest and most important Coast Guard stations in Southern California. The station provides law enforcement, emergency services, and support to the community. In addition to its essential functions, the Station also offers civilians access to information about marine life and coastal safety. The history of Coast Guard gift giving began with the establishment of the Station. A group of businessmen from Pasadena donated land on which the Station would be built. The first gifts were donations of food and equipment for use by the Coast Guardsmen stationed at South Pasadena. In 1927, a Chapel was dedicated at South Pasadena Station in memory of Rear Admiral David Sanger who had been lost overboard during World War I. Since its inception, South Pasadena Station has received many gifts from people all over Southern California. Some examples include: a radar installation; an ice cream truck; acomplete set of naval signals; telescopes; radios; clothing items such as hats and raincoats; toys; books on maritime history and navigation;; fishing gear;; erythema treatment tools;; erythema control products;; medical supplies;; lighthouse keepers tools;; United States Naval Academy cadets uniforms;; Today, Coast Guard gift giving continues to play an important role in our community. In 1967, the United States Coast Guard Museum was founded and located at USCG Headquarters. In 1984, the USCG Education Department moved from its original location on Harborview Drive to a new building on Willow Street. Today, USCG South Pasadena has three buildings: One is used as the Commandant's office; another is used for storage and administrative purposes; and finally, one is used as a museum.
South Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena is part of the San Gabriel Valley. The first known inhabitants of what is now South Pasadena were the Tongva people who lived on an island in Lake Elsinore off the coast of modern-day Orange County. The Tongva were replaced by the Chumash around 1690 and by missionaries in 1769 when they founded missions at Mission San Gabriel and Mission Santa Anita. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico granted Rancho Santa Anita to David Lane Richards who called it "Pasadena." Richards built a post office and cattle ranch there in 1849 which became one of southern California's most prosperous communities until it fell victim to economic depression during the late 19th century. The area that would become South Pasadena was annexed by Los Angeles on November 3, 1909 as part of the annexation of Los Angeles into federal government under President William Howard Taft. At this time much of what is now South Pasadena consisted of open land near downtown including chaparral and oak woodland habitats typical for Southern California coastal areas dating back to pre-historic times with evidence of Homo erectus fossils dating back about 30,000 years ago. One source suggests that early humans likely hunted big game such as deer, bear and elephant where available while others suggest they scavenged food items found along shorelines or living things lost overboard from ships or when landed onshore due to high waves or storms Surficial evidence points towards human presence since 12k BP although no definitive proof exists A post office was opened at mile marker 24 (now US 101) in what is now south Pasadena on October 1st 1850 by Jno Astoriphage; it served as a stop for stagecoaches coming down via los angeles harbor until 1862 when mail delivery moved up I Street which became unofficially known as "Post Office Avenue" because mail delivered there was then sent directly to Fort Worth, Texas rather than stopping at Astoria for processing In 1865 local farmer C W Beall developedran Block No 4 still standing today bounded by Northwood Avenue on the east (northwest), Park Ave NE (southwest), Willowbrook Ave NW (northeast), Maple Grove Ave SE (southeast) & Vine St SW (south). It contained over 1100 acres including present day Springdale Rd., Elysian Fields Dr., Slippery Rock Rd., Highland Hills Dr., Arroyo Seco Loop & Laurel Canyon Blvd.. The block formed SOUTH PASADENA – bounded currently by Springdale Rd., Elysian Fields Dr., Slippery Rock Rd., Highland Hills Dr., Arroyo Seco Loop & Laurel Canyon Blvd.– during this time blacksmith shops also flourished though few remain today
