Over time, The Roper Cafe became known for its unique art deco design as well as its wonderful cup of java - always satisfyingly strong! In 1984, Starbucks opened up shop in what is now called McNamara Plaza across from McClaren Park Stadiumsadiums! South Pasadena is one of the wealthiest communities in Los Angeles County and has a strong history as a small agricultural community. The town was founded by Greek immigrants on land that now includes Chinatown and most of South Pasadena. The name "South Pasadena" may have been given to the area by early settlers because it seemed like a more natural place for farming than other parts of Los Angeles County. According to one story, settlers were looking for a place where they could live without fear of raiders from up north so they named their new community after Mount South Pasadena in San Gabriel Valley. Today's residents are descendants of these original settlers who built homes around 1875 on land that included Chinatown and most of today's south side of University Boulevard between Fair Oaks Drive and Nicholson Road. During World War II, South Pasadena played an important role as the site where many American soldiers stationed in Southern California volunteered or were drafted into service. South Pasadena was founded in 1887 by John P. Eastman and his wife, Anna Palmer. The first post office in South Pasadena was established in 1889. In 1899, the city acquired land from the Rancho Foothills Quarantine Station to develop as a town. The first mayor of South Pasadena was John Dennett. In 1925, the city annexed nearby Encinitas and became a fully incorporated municipality with a population of over 30,000 people. In 1959, South Pasadena voters passed an ordinance that exempted local boys from service in American military forces during World War II because of its then-recent declaration of war on Japan. This led to controversy within the community and eventually resulted in the repeal of this ordinance two years later by a vote of 12-0 percent against it at a City Council meeting. In 1984, South Pasadena voters passed an ordinance declaring themselves an official “gay rights” town. At that time, there were only two other municipalities in California that had such statutes – West Hollywood and Santa Monica – both of which had been voted into existence soon after by their respective cities’ homosexual majorities (West Hollywood had been founded as Venice Beach in 1915). In 1990, South Pasadena voters defeated Measure B, which would have limited property values for single-family homes located on residential streets outside downtown to no more than $50 per square foot (the measure narrowly failed due to lack of signatures). The defeat effectively ended any attempt by developers to build high-density housing near downtown South Pasadena through what is now known as "The Village".
