In 1851, Michael J. Roebuck opened a grocery store on Imperial Avenue near Colorado Boulevard in South Pasadena. This store became known as the Roebuck & Company Store and later changed its name to The Roebuck & Company Grocery and eventually closed in 1915. South Pasadena, California is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,491. South Pasadena is located on the southern edge of LA's core, and has a largely Latino population which includes many high-end businesses and professionals. The area has been inhabited by the Tongva people for thousands of years. The first Europeans to sight what is now South Pasadena were Spanish traders in 1769 when they sailed up the San Gabriel River. They named it "Pasadena" after one of their own captains who had explored that part of California. In 1821 Mexican land grants were made to settlers in what would become South Pasadena. One settler was John Downey who built a small ranch on present day State Route 87 near Arroyo Seco Creek in 1826. In 1881 Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance allowing for development within city limits without previous annexation from neighboring municipalities such as Pasadena or San Marino. This led to the formation of several small towns inside LA including South Pasadena according to current zoning regulations adopted in 1959; these towns are still considered part of LA despite not having any connection with each other historically or geographically speaking

South Pasadena, California is a small town located in Pasadena County, California. It was founded in 1887 by Augustus Finch and his wife Lucy. South Pasadena is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Pasadena. The original homes were built on the edge of a hill overlooking downtown Los Angeles and are now part of various historical museums around town. The community was originally known as "Pasadena" because it adjoined Rancho del Pacifico which was granted to José Joaquín Córdoba in 1795. In 1887, Augustus Finch donated land to the City of Los Angeles for $100 and laid out what would become South Pasadena on that land. The first settlers were John Wingate and his family who arrived in 1892. They operated a hacienda called Pico de la Hacienda until 1916 when they sold it to Harry Chandler for $1,500. In 1912, Daniel Boorstin purchased an acreage near Commerce Street and North Avenue from Mrs Chandler for $5,000 which he renamed "Boulevard Heights". He developed it into what is today's South Pasadena with single-family residences and a number of businesses including his own grocery store, movie theater, department stores ( Sears & Roebuck & Co., JCPenney), bank ( First National Bank), insurance company ( Farmers Insurance Company) and many others over the years including several homes built by Hollywood stars such as Cecil Blythe and Katharine Hepburn. Boulevard Heights became known as "Boulevard Boulevard" after Boulevard Road which ran through the center of town before turning south towards central Los Angeles at Sepulveda Boulevard whereupon Boulevard Blvd crossed over into Beverly Hills proper). After World War II most of this development stopped as homeowners lost their home values due to war-related destruction but some buildings still remain such as Boulevard Blvd.'s Masonic Temple which burned down in 1961 but has been rebuilt more recently at 9255 W Sunset Blvd., just east of Centennial Park Drive between Century Park Drive/Wadsworth Drive/Los Feliz Boulevard
