South Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 86,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the LA-Updates Micropolitan Statistical Area. South Pasadena was a small, but important town in Los Angeles County, California. It was located on the east side of Pasadena, between Center and Washington Streets. The population of South Pasadena during the 1920s was about 1,500 people. By the 1990s it had shrunk to less than 100 people. South Pasadena’s history can be traced back to 1885 when James Auld settled a land grant in what is now South Pasadena. He named his settlement after his home country Scotland – Perthshire (now part of Edinburgh). A few years later, John Sanger arrived in search of new land grants and named his settlement after himself; South Park Street became Sanger Road. In 1902, Jens Rasmussen purchased some property in what is now Northpark Drive from Auld for $5,000. Rasmussen built a house on this property which he called Rasmussen House (later known as the Slaton-Moses House). In 1912, Rasmussen sold additional property to Harry Burtch and erected a two-story frame building on it which he called Burtch Hall (later known as South Pasadena High School). Rasmussen House served as the headquarters for several local organizations including the Grosse Pointe League Baseball Club and the Southern California Jewish Council until it burnt down in 1965. The second building stood until 1978 when it caught fire and destroyed by arson while being used as an apartment complex. The first building still stands today serving as a museum dedicated to James Auld and South Park Street's history
