The town's first store was opened in 1886 by J.M. Goodman & Sons, a grocery chain that later merged with Peet's Coffee Company. The early years of South Pasadena were tough, but it slowly started to emerge as a center for culture and commerce during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. In 1911, South Park was established adjacent to South Pasadena; it quickly became one of the most popular community centers inLos Angeles County thanks to its wide variety of cultural activities and its close proximity to downtown LA. During World War II, South Pasadena played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center; parts made from local aluminum plants were crucial for war production. After the war ended, however, industries began to decline in South Pasadena; Aluminum Workers' Union Local 1005 filed for bankruptcy in 1967 after experiencing several rounds of job cuts over the previous decade. In 1984, Mayor Jack Nichols proposed demolishing all remaining structures in south park following decades of neglect at a time when many aspects ofsouthparkwere facing significant deterioration (including infrastructure damage). The proposal met opposition from locals who saw their community as something that should be preserved - eventually successful in saving much of south park despite heavy financial investment by city officials seeking demolition only once all parties could agree on plans for future development
