Parker with a proclamation from Governor Edmund Gwynn. The population of South Pasadena grew rapidly during its early years, reaching 10,000 in 1890! By 1920 there were over 30 businesses in the city limits and over 100 residents! Many famous people have lived or worked in South Park including Jackie Robinson and Roy Wood Jr.. In 1969, when Watts riots erupted across LA County and Southern California involving white supremacists and black militants looting banks and vandalizing public property%, North Park Boulevard—the only road open to traffic within Downtown Los Angeles through most of its length—was renamed Rodney King Boulevard in honor of then-Los Angeles Police Department officer shot dead while fighting rioters outside an establishment on North Park Boulevard near USC campus; this happened just after local activist Jesse Jackson had given a speech at nearby UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Presidential Library about “community activism” among minority youth inside LAPD precincts throughout Southern California.
