South Pasadena is a town in Los Angeles County, California. It was incorporated on December 17, 1892. The population was 33,854 at the 2010 census. South Pasadena is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area and is served by the South Pasadena Unified School District. The first people to live in what is now South Pasadena were Native American traders who traveled through this area between 1650 and 1800. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to private individuals in what is now downtown Los Angeles. The grantees formed a company that named their lands "Los Paseos de la Cantera" or "Passes of the Mule." In 1847, José María Atanasoff moved from Mexico City to Angelino Heights and started trading with settlers in Southern California. He built his first home onpresent-day North Avenue in 1850 and name it Rancho Atanasoff after himself and his wife María del Carmen Atanasoff (1814-1886). Rancho Atanasoff became an important center for cattle raising, crops, sheep farming, mining operations and local government during the 1860s and 1870s. In 1892, when Pasadena Municipal Railway began service through downtown Los Angeles to eastside neighborhoods such as Echo Park and Beverly Hills, Mayor Edward Condon designated parts of south central Los Angeles as a “town” within city limits so that residents could get easy access to education, business opportunities and services available within city limits without having to leave their homes. This decision led to growth of southcentral LA along present day Spring Street including much of present day South Pasadena which was annexed by the city on October 1st 1896 just five years after incorporation! On May 15th 1899 Charles Ayer purchased 2 lots located east of Ascot Road (now Redondo Boulevard) from Hilda Sánchez for $2 per lot plus interest ($10 total). On July 12th 1900 Ayer conveyed these lots - together with all other Lots Nos 1-4 inclusive - plus all rights therein abutting (northwest corner), lying west side of Spring Street between Ascot Road & Redondo Boulevard thenceforth called Main Street
