The area now known as South Pasadena was part of Rancho Tejon and later, the Rancho San Gabriel. The first European to visit this area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1835, Jose Maria Castilla y Costilla surveyed what is now South Pasadena and laid out a town site on the east side of San Marino Boulevard. He named it after his father-in-law, Don José de Aragón y Zaldivar, then Governor of California. In 1847, rancho owner Manuel Nieto sold two lots in what is now South Pasadena for $2 each to James Laughlin. Laughlin built a adobe home on one of the lots and called it "Laughing Jack". In 1853, he sold another lot for $4 to J.P. Morgan who built a larger house there which he named "Morgan House". Between 1854 and 1865, many people moved into South Pasadena from various parts of Southern California because gold was discovered in that region.
